How do you feel about it? Love it? Hate it? Which places in your area has them?

I don't like them. There is one at a frozen yogurt place near our house - you fill the yogurt and put the toppings on yourself. Are you supposed to tip for them ringing you up?

Some of them I am a bit skeptical like in the case of the above post. I would wonder about that. Others, I don't know. They have them at a lot of coffee shops and for those, I have decided, that if I'm going to tip you, I will hand it to you directly instead of dropping it in the jar for it to be split with several people. I'd rather you know that I was tipping you directly for YOUR good service and not just because the jar was there. Though sometimes, if I get an especially good deal, I will tip a bit in the jar, you know kind of spreading the wealth around.

The only time I've ever put money into a tip jar is when I'm in a bar. I believe that they are suitable in these places. I don't agree with them popping up in every place that you go. If I want to tip someone, I will tip them directly. Fast food joints are fast food joints for a reason. They are for quick service and to move customers in and out as quickly as possible while providing satisfactory service. It's not to provide exceptional service and to make a person feel like they've been given a special experience or dining service, etc.

There are some at our local sandwich shops/bakery. It is just a little wierd to me. I am never sure how to go about that!

I usually don't tip. They are making me a sandwich (that I am paying for) and I get my own drink and chips. I pick up my sandwich at the counter. So what am I tipping for?

We also have a restaurant where everyone puts their tips in a jar and they are evenly split at the end of the night. That doesn't sound right to me!

I have to agree with the fast food restaurants, I wont tip them, Regular restaurants that people actually serve my food and make my food yes I will tip them, Coffee shops I always tip and bartenders too. I work in the tip industry and one thing I cannot stand is when people think they are owed a tip. I always view tips as a bonus, I never expect people to tip, but when they do I am very gracious. Tips in my opinion should never be forced, you should tip if you get good service, that is why tips were started in the first place

I do not use tip jars. I tip when I'm seated and served. Obviously bars are different but I still don't use the jar or dish, I tip the bartender directly.

Tip jars make me sad. Did you know that an employer can pay less than minimum wage if their employees receive tips? That tip jar can sometimes indicate an employer who's doing that. Those employers are legally supposed to make sure that wages plus tips equals at least min wage, but many employees don't know that and don't fight it if it doesn't.

If I feel an employees has done something to deserve a tip I hand it directly to them .

I agree, if I want to tip the person that I thought gave me good service, I would hand it directly to them.

But most of the time, I just throw my change (coin) in the tip jar at a fast food place.

I think they are a bit tacky. It is like asking for a tip which seems a little gauche. I do not think it makes an establishment look good. That being said, I have been known to stick my loose change in them.
