I've struggled with CC debt for 10 years and this year I have vowed to get it paid off. First, I had to identify why I shopped. 1. I always was taught that people judge you by how you look, so I always had to look sharp, 2. Really didn't understand the conseqences of debt, 3. out of boredom and 4, just couldn't stand to miss that GREAT deal. But the 2 years, I've really put my head to the grind and doing it. It's not easy. It's hard, but here's what I did and I've paid off, almost 15,000 on my morgage, paid my car off in 3 years vs 5 and have paid off 12,000 in CC, still have 16,000 to go.
No more plastic, Not even a debt card. I set up a budget and included savings, of 10% from each check. I did no extra shopping until all my bills were paid which usually was around the 20th of the month. You make the necessary adjustments. I'm using up what I have in the house and that is making a huge savings difference, I had almost 500 in checks from work (hospital) that I have not used for groceries because I've been so well stocked up. CAll your cc companies. That's what I'm in the middle of doing. I'm trying to get my discover card to come down, I have 9000 on that with a rate of 13%. I just got an offer from Chase of 3.9 until the balance is paid off.
Make sure your utilities are what you need and not paying anymore. Cell phone, cable and such. I also have a book, that every payment I make I record and helps me see I'm doing it.
I had the 2 realizations doing this. One was when I seperated that I had too much debt and I could not qualify for a mortgage or anything in my name so I wanted to improve that and also I didn't want to go back to work just to afford CC and daycare.
I do shop for quality vs. quantity, which was really hard for me. I still shop at Target, I find their stuff holds up pretty well, but we have outlets, and I love the children's place outlet for the kids. Pants and top for $1 or $2 a piece I couldn't do that at a yard sale. Take notice of what is a want and need. I have found since doing this, I have the time to sit with my kids and play, or do my nails or take a nice bath, all things I longed to do for a long time.
Debt robs your of time and money. It's seems as an easy fix, but it's not. HAve you looked into the prescription coverage that Montell mentions about, I don't know what you medical or prescription coverage is. Right now we're paying almost 700 a month for medical, dental and prescription. But for 3 months if we opt for generic RX there's no co-pay. Also ,build up a Emergency fund. THis past month, Decemeber, we got hit hard and really had to buckle our belts. Brian went hunting for a week thinking he had vacation time, well, no and he didn't get paid for a week, our septic went on x-mas day of 350 and I spent New YEars Day in the ER for 100. That's a must. IF there is anything I can do to help, just PM me. Good luck.
