Hi, I'm a newbie so I hope I have put this in the right place. What do you charge for items at a yard sale? I have never had one, but I have collected alot of things that I need to get rid of and I could really use the money. I have kids clothes, household knick-knacks, christmas ornaments and decor., and other misc items. I haven't been to a yard sale in a long time and I don't know what are good prices to ask. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Virginia

Well, if I just want to get rid of it and not have to haul it the goodwill....Everything is a quarter. Yes, I know that sounds crazy, but last spring I had a garage sale and did this. I got rid of SO MUCH stuff. If your wanting to raise money...I have read that you should price things at 1/3 what you paid. I personally think that is too high. Most of the time I am told I price things too low.

It really depends on your area. You should go to a few yard sales to get an idea of what others charge. I know in my mom's area things go for more than double what they would sell for here.

I usually price things pretty cheap because obviously I'm wanting to get rid of things so I don't want to price them too high and have them not sell. You still make some money this way too.

I always put up a sign saying prices negotiable or make me an offer. That way if I did price things too high there is still a good chance of them selling. You can always say no if you don't like the offer.

Good Luck!

I agree that is way too high. I do about 1/10 of retail. So if I bought jeans for $25.00, I would price them at $2.50 or probably even less. There is no way I would use the 1/3 formula and put them at $8.00. I mostly do it to get rid of things and have some fun, four of us have a sale together every spring to clear crap out. We still end up making money though. Even with pricing cheap we made almost $3,000 last year.

I look at the item and think- if i were at a yard sale what would i pay for this- seems silly and simple but i have found that since i am frugal- i would know how high to price something- plus if you are having a yardsale- you don't want the item anymore- and people who normally frequesnt yardsales - at least around here are looking for a deal...
hope that helps

I usually do what I call 'bulk' pricing, I price a whole bunch of stuff at 25 cents or a dollar and fill up a whole table or box with stuff all the same price, then the bigger ticket items like bikes, chairs etc. I start with a higher price like say $10 then, I let people talk me down or i mark it down about 1/2 way thru the day/sale. Another good idea is to have things clean and organized so that it makes it easy to shop, I noticed at my last yard sale I had a box with a bunch of cups in it marked at 25 cents each, people didn't seem to want to root thru the box, so they passed it by, I then set the cups on a table and ended up selling a few of them.

I'm having another yard sale this Memorial Day weekend with some friends, I'll probably be asking some opinions on pricing on here too, before long!!

Good Luck with your yard sale!!

I'd say anywhere from 10% to 25% of the original price, or 75-90% off. Some in-demand items in good condition (ie Little Tikes, name-brand kids' clothing) you can get away with pricing higher than the 90% off rule. I do best when I price to sell - don't get too greedy or sentimentally attached to your "stuff". Most of my kids' clothes I price from $.25 - $3.00. Books a quarter, VHS tapes a dollar, toys around a dollar, etc. You want to get rid of it!

I agree with Kim. I usually price most clothes and shoes - kids and adults at $.50 - $1. Little more for coats. Books $.25-50 and toys I usually price really cheap because I definately want to get rid of those! The last time I had a sale I really wanted to GET RID of stuff so I also put up a sign that said "Don't like the price - make me an offer". On the bigger, more expensive stuff I didn't haggle too much at the beginning of the sale but was certainly willing to bargain by the end.
