trust me you are not the only one in this situation. My dh and I are living on one income and here's our debt: over 11,000 on one card, over 5,000 on another card and one car payment (outstanding balance over 16,000) my hubby only makes 41,600 a year after taxes and health insurance he only brings home about 31,000 a year. We pay more than the min. on cc each month but our interest is pretty high since our credit's not that good and I regularly call cc company and negotiate lower rates so we are trying. It's hard though when you really need something, like we had to buy bunk beds for my dd's cuz there room is so tiny that 2 beds would not fit in there in any way shape or form, and I refuse to buy something crappy that might fall apart so even though my mom helped with some of the cost we had to charge it and all these things along with interest add up and sometimes it feels like we'll never be done paying.

Welcome! So glad you posted! You'll get lots of great ideas on here - money saving, recipes and parenting to name a few. Hope you continue to give us updates on how you're doing and give some advice to the rest of us as well.

A couple of ideas for you - as an accountant, is it possible to do some part-time work, maybe in the evenings or weekends when DH is home to make some extra work. Hmmm, tax time is here and that would seem to be a good time to do a few returns and make some extra $$. Also, I would reconsider the order of paying things off and would pay off the car before the student loans if they are giving you a tax break on that - of course consider the interest rate on each first.

Good luck!!

Congratulations and Welcome! Congrat's on the fact that you are ready to do something about the situation that you knew you were in, but felt it was too difficult to admit.
Soooo many of us have been there before. I remember when I finally told my DH how much we owed on CC's, and was so scared. I was shocked by his reaction which was very positive and supportive.

Stop the stressing about it and do something to rectify instead. Today was your first step to financial freedom. It won't happen over night, but it will happen.

WElcome!

We have faith in you, you can kick the debt habit! Feel free to drop in anytime you need a kick in the pants to keep going. Its HARD, its frustrating, and it gets old real quick. BUT you and I both know, we don't deserve to live like this. WE too have CC debt, and lots of it. But with alot of determination, and dicipline it will be GONE soon.

It took a lot of courage to post that and I'll be the last person to judge anyone on their finances or choices! We have enough of our own debt we are working on paying off. Two names come to mind: Dave Ramsey and Mary Hunt. Head to the library and find their books, they have some excellent information about this very topic! Glad you joined us and good luck!

Please do not think you are an idiot...things happen and when the change was made to become a sahm, it just took time to change your habits...

As the Mom of a special needs child, I know how hard it is to go from school to OT to social skills therapy, then have to put dinner on the table...it's so easy to just charge a meal on the credit card, etc.

But you seem to have a handle on things, you seem to be very ready to pay off your debt. Good luck; keep us posted on how things are going and please feel free to let us know when you need cheering up or a little smile in your day...
