How much do you pay in bank fees? (including ATM fees or year fees for credit cards)?

I have to admit one of my biggest pet peeves are big banks that make billions of dollars and still charge us little guys bank fees.

I switched over to no fee banking in 1999, dropping my $10 a month flat rate fee. In the last 7 years I've saved $840 in bank fees alone!

I bank at credit unions and online so NO fees. I do have to keep enough $$ in my accounts or they charge a small fee but I do that anyway just to make sure I have enough money to cover whatever comes up. I do buy my own checks but that is the only expense I have - I only use 4-5 a month anyway so that's not a big expense.

Ours is free as well! We belong to a teacher's Credit Union. They also have really low interest rates for loans. We have been very lucky. We do have to buy checks but I use so few that I only order a box every 3 or 4 years!

That's one of my peeves too. I would NEVER pay fees to bank's or credit cards. I think the credit card companies hate people like me because I pay everything that I possibly can by credit card to get all the points and then pay everything off and never pay interest or fees. So I guess they're paying me to let me use their credit card . I also opt for all interest bearing accounts at banks but at least they get to use my money and make money off of me that way.

I cant understand why people would pay a fee when plenty of banks are free.
My mom pays and complains about it but when I tell her to switch she says maybe.

We bank with USAA and do all of our banking online. We can even deposit checks online buy using our scanner and the moment you complete the transaction the money you deposited is available instantly. We have no fees and they give back all ATM fees so if we take money out and the atm charges 2.95 we have to pay it and then the start of the next month we actually get the money put right back into our checking account. Also if we use our debit card as a credit card in stores USAA gives us 1% of the purchase back. 1% doesnt sound like alot but one month we got back 16.00!!!! We were purchasing wood floors, a heap pump and central air unit, plasma tv, furniture and tools so thats why we got back so much. USAA also has the most superior customer service. We have our home owners and auto insurance through them as well and when our car got broken into we called, made a claim and less than 3 days later got the insurance money deposited into our checking account. We refinanced a loan over the phone in less than 45 minutes. We got a car loan over the phone with all the info faxed to the car dealer in less than an hour. Every time I loose my debit card (which is way way way too often) I get a new one in the mail within a few days. I just cannot say enough good things about USAA! They really are wonderful.

Just for interest sake (pun intended) I thought I'd look up some of the Canadian banks to compare monthly fees for an unlimited checking account.

It would be great if someone could do it for the US just to compare. I don't know which are the big banks there.

Monthly Fees for Unlimited Checking Account
Royal Bank of Canada $11.95
Canadian Imperial Bank $12.95
TD / Canada Trust $12.95
Scotiabank $9.95
President's Choice Financial $0 (this is where I bank)
Other Credit Unions ? (I've never gone in one ... anyone else know?)

I don't pay anything for banking or for bill paying. However if you bounce a check it is $35.00
