My DH isnt offered a retirement fund. I am taking a small amount of what I use each month and putting it into mutual funds. I intend to purchase a rental property in the near future. It will increase in value and eventually when we sell it, will use that money for investing for retirement. I am 30 now, so, I have a bit of time to play with.

We are planning for retirement. If for some reason your marriage does not last, a stay at home mom is not left out in the cold for retirement. The assets would be divided as part of the settlement, regardless of who's investment account they are in or who has the 401K in name.

I am excited to say though, that in the few years that worked and with interest, I have over $30k from my old 401K.

Ladies, ladies, ladies - you just absolutely MUST have a retirement account in your own name. Even when you are not working outside the home you can set up a Roth IRA and contribute several thousand dollars a year to it. Please, please, please, set up your own retirement accounts in your name. So many things can happen that can alter plans if you are basing your entire retirement on accounts in someone else's name. please please do this - there is really NO reason not to have money in each of your names and so many reasons to do it.

I have to agree 100% with this one. We really don't know what the future holds. Even for tax purposes, it will be so much better if both of you are taking separate amounts out of retirement rather than just out of one where the one person gets taxed on the whole amount.

Even if you don't do anything else suggested on these boards, ever, if you do this one thing, it will make a tremendous difference to your future financial security.

I have a small IRA and have contributed a little to a ROTH in my name. As I answered in a previous post, I also have a little money invested from the sale of a house I bought when I was single prior to marrying dh. When we got married and bought our own home, he told me to put that money in my name since it had been my house. Of course since I haven't worked for a zillion years while he has been, he has much more in retirement than me. I admit, it does worry me to think he might run off with some young chick and leave me a penniless old lady, but I think by law he would have to split his retirement with me. THe problem is it's hard for two people with separate houses to live on half the retirement that you had planned on both of you spending together. So I guess if he tries to run off, I'll just have to tie him up in the house.
