In the state I live in, if you get a divorce, the retirement is split down the middle. I don't know about every state though.

I still have my 401K with my previous employer (Fed Govt) from when I was working. I am also contributing $4K a year to a Spousal IRA. I am funding my current contributions with the proceeds from cashing in old Series E Savings Bonds that my mother had bought for me when I was a child. DH has a 401K through his employer.

I completely agree with Lou ~ a woman should have a retirement account in her own name.

I haven't posted in a while, but those SAHMs that do not have any retirement savings - PLEASE start one. I am currently going through a divorce after 18 years of marriage. While I thankfully have been putting a little $$ into my IRA these past 8 years while I was "at home", (which I rolled from my 401k when I left work) it is seriously not enough to take care of me down the road. I seriously thought DH (not dear) and I would be retiring together and we focussed most of our saving efforts in his 401k. Luckily I have a good lawyer who is working to get me 1/2 of his 401k due to being a marital asset. Please, please ladies take care of yourselves - I never ever thought I would be going through this but life throws curve balls when you least expect them. Please protect yourselves.

I have some investments from before I "retired" to SAHM, and the rest are in hubby's name. I've never thought of getting some of his investments just in my name, but probably will. I imagine it could be a tax advantage as well.
