Just wanted to post about my attic fan. I use this a bunch and it saves me a ton from turning the a/c on and still cools the house down. Some call it a 'whole house fan' some an 'attic fan'. Either way, it sucks the hot air out of the house and draws the cool air in through the open windows. I use it a lot in the spring and fall when it can get hot during the day inside the house but cools off quite a bit at night. I don't use my a/c much in the summer so this helps bring in the air when it is cooler outside than inside as it is most nights. It doesn't really help with high humidity but it makes it bearable for me without turning the a/c on much.

It's been in the mid 90s here the last couple of days and I didn't have the a/c on because I had run the attic fan at night and it cooled it off enough inside that it stayed cool for most of the day. Ours was in the house when we moved in so I don't know how much they would cost but it might be worth checking into for those with such high a/c bills. I think they would work well for a 2 story house especially. (it is noisy but you get used to it!)

Our attic fan has a thermometer we can set. Once the attic gets to this temp. then it kicks on so it won't run when it doesn't need to.

I did see an increase in my electric bill, though.

We use a whole house fan too. *You are right on the money to say it is perfect for those nights when it cools down outside. *Ours is so noisy! *Apparently they have some newer ones on the market where you install three to five smaller ones in the attic and they are much quieter yet more efficient. *We also got a rebate ($75-100, if I remember correctly) from our electric company when we installed ours. *You can either install it yourself (DH or neighbor) or have a company do it.

We have a two story and our neihgbors have a one story - they use theirs all the time. We live in Southern California but inland so it reaches 115 degrees in the summer. That is when it just doesn't cool down enough outside for me to use it.

Ok, what is this? I have a two story house...with a walk in attic that opens into my daughter's room. It has a sealed off door, like a regular outside door, but it stays HOT in dd's room. I am wondering if this would help?

As I said, mine came with the house I bought so I don't know much about it - just know it keeps me cool! *I googled attic fan and came up with this website which seems to know more than I do *(hope this works)attic fans

This is not something you would use with your a/c, it is something you would use instead of the a/c when it's cooler outside than inside.
