I noticed that people view their money in either one of two ways:

1-They are keenly aware of the inflows and outflows of their funds and track all their major expenditures by the source of the funds which paid for them.

2-They consider all money to be fungible and mix all inflows and outflows.

For instance, I have a friend who can tell me that she paid for the bathroom remodel with her bonus $$, the new kitchen floor was funded with her tax return refund, etc. I, on the other hand, don't distinguish among the sources of our money. We pay for things from the general pot and I couldn't even begin to tell you what source of the money funded what expenditure.

Which way do you view your money? Any idea why you view it that way?

I am one that knows exactly what money funded what project. I don't normally go around telling people 'I remodeled _____ with my bonus money' but to myself I figure it that way. I am not sure why I do it, unless it is because I don't have the money to do things like that unless I get a big chunk from my bonus or tax return.

How do I view my money? That is easy - already gone before it ever gets in my account

Our money all goes to one big pot and takes care of whatever we need to buy.

I do a mix. Like I know where my tax return is going, but it will be direct deposited just like dh's checks so it's all in one pot until I sort it out into the different accounts. For bonus I tend to say this bonus went to this...etc. But in reality that could have been from the paycheck and the bonus paid the bills. It all comes from the same place so it doesn't really matter no matter how I say it.

Ours is all one big pot. We may do this because we don't usually receive large sums of money all at once -- no bonues, we try to break even on taxes, etc. Major purchases afe always planned way in advance, not planned around times when we expect to receive larger amounts of money. But, many of our friends plan big purchases around certain events because they work factory or mining jobs and get bonuses. Plus, they plan on large tax refund checks.

I know what money went where too. I don't know why. Mybe its because we have been so broke the last few years that when the money is 'extra' I know exactly where it came from and make the plans for it.

We are of the "One Big Pot" mindset.

I am a very organized person, I like to keep things in boxes and departments. So my money is in seperate compartments depending on where it came from, I dont put it all in the same pot. I put tax refund in a seperate account and allot that for seperate stuff, bonus might be in an seperate account and used for somehting else. I just do it to stay more organized and know what i spent from where.
