After watching "The Secret" on Oprah yesterday, I was reminded of something that I already was aware of. How you view your financial situation has a huge impact on it. If you're in debt, are you walking around thinking "Our situation is so bad, we're in so deep..." or are you saying to yourself, "We've got a plan to make our lives better, and this is what we're doing about it..." ???

The difference is huge. Basically the point is this: If you're focusing on the positive changes you are making in your life, you are going to attract positive changes. If you're dwelling on the negative, that negative state is going to be perpetuated. Your thoughts, feelings and actions have a bigger influence on what actually happens than what you might think.

It is kind of like the saying "Fake it until you make it."

When I was going through a lot of stress a few years back, particularly in my job, I decided to fake a overly positive attitude. It rubs off on the people around you. It actually worked, I was much happier not dwelling on a situation that I couldn't change at the time.

This is so true about many aspects in our lives, not just debt. If we have a positive change plan about our body and weight loss it will be easier, if we have a positive outlook towards our children and ways to improve, we are better mothers, if we have a positive outlook towards our husbands and ways to improve our relationship we have better marriages.

While I am not a happy, happy person all the time, I sure try to be because my life is so much easier when I do have that attitude. Whenever there is trouble (obviously, there are situations you CAN'T control), and I refocus on the positive aspects, it sure makes it easier! It is a constant challenge in my life, but it does work!

Sorry to hijack your thread, Kim, but I just had to point that out.

I so believe this!
I am a very, very optimistic person, I have 1yr plans and 5yr plans. I dont focus on the negative, but am very proactive to the point of being obsessed about fixing the problem and moving on. I sometimes do think that what I need in that month seems to appear magically, every month we seem to make all the bills plus a little more. It seems we get there, we get a extra check, or a rebate, or something happens and we are blessed. Maybe that is the positive events.

On the other hand, DH is the total oposite and drives me crazy, he is always focusing on the negative, saying things like we are broke, or we have too much debt($2000 is not too much!) and freaking out about what we can do! I get mad at him for pulling me down with him sometimes too. His negative thinking will also effect his body too, he ends up with IBS and other ailments.

Absolutely! I grew up in a positive household and had a wonderful childhood. DH grew up in a negative household and had a horrible childhood. He could not undestand why I was always so positive, and I had troubles understanding his pessimism. Over the years, he has come to understand how my positive attitude has influenced so many things in my life, and he is so much more positive now! It makes such a huge difference! Attitude is everything in everything!

My dad who is 55 just came through colorectal cancer surgery, treatment, adjusting to a colostomy and most people never even knew it! His attitude was phenomenal! He was the best example for anyone who knew about the situation. His recovery was penomenal, too! He amazed the docs. But, they all agreed. It was his attitude that made the difference.

Mindset will direct your subconscious which can change many, many things that you can not plan for. It will dictate how you react to things. That makes a difference in the end.

I saw the show and in some aspects I can see the point, but I have trouble when it all gets to cheerleaderie. I believe you have to look towards your goal and not dwell on your problems and that we are responsible for our own destiny. But the rah rah stuff turns me off.
