For those that don't know dh was medically discharged from the Army this past summer. Even though he was discharged for medical reasons, *army caused* they gave us a zero percent diability rating. Umm...that's retarded.

So we've challenged it and finally something has happened. He was given a 30% disability rating! Which is much better than zero but not as high as it should be. If you knew the pain my dh was in all the time you'd understand why I say this. So we are still going to see about making them raise the percentage (they gave him only 10% on 3 things and 3 others are at zero) but I'm so glad they are doing this. Now he will also be able to get his VA medical benefits. Plus we are mailing back in the paperwork to claim me as his dependent so that will raise the money too.

The only thing that annoyed me is that they gave him a severance check when he was discharged and now that he is getting disability they are making us pay that money back. Actually it is coming out of his disability checks. So we won't get the full amount of the disability until 2010!! But really I would much rather him be recognized by the VA than have that severance money.

I just had to share. I am so glad that they are finally recognizing everything that dh has been put through.

Yes, every little bit does help, because even though they are taking out over 50% to start off, its still much better than nothing!

And yes, he should get these checks for life.

Thanks for all the happy dances! I'm still doing mine. This money will be going right into savings, can't beat that.

He should be able to get back pay as well. For all the months that it has been since he has been out. If he doesn't, you might want to check on it. Let me know if you have more questions about it. I am 50% disabled by the VA standards and received back pay when my case was settled. Good luck!

Thanks Liamsmyangel. They are starting the checks from back when he was discharged. Its really a blessing for us. I may still have a few questions about the rest of the process if you don't mind me asking. DH hates to ask questions so I am unsure about a lot of things. Such as medical coverage. Why do they have to make everything complicated?

No problem! I am convinced that the reason that they make it so difficult is because they want people to give up with all the "red tape". Also, I think the VA is swamped with all the recent disabled veterans. Sad but true.
