I experienced something today that really bothers me. I opened mail today to find a letter from a debt reduction company explaining what they could "do for me" in reducing my debt. Well, I get mailings like this all the time, so I'm surprised I didn't just chunk it in the trash like I usually do. As I skimmed the offer, I noticed that this company had listed the EXACT balance on my mortgage and probably the exact balance for revolving credit if you add our car loans to our credit card debt. The company is one that I've never heard of. How did they get the information concerning my debt??? I've not given anyone permission to do an inquiry on my credit report. That is the only way that I can think of that this company could have gotten the info. Has anyone else had something like this happen? Any idea how they were able to access my informaiton? Any ideas on what I can do to prevent it from happening in the future? If they can get this info off of the credit report, what else can they get? It's a scary thought!

You know, I have had something similar to that a while back as well. I believe mine was to refinance my mortgage. I don't know why I didn't question it more. I just remember thinking it was weird.

The credit agencies SELL your information. You can choose to opt out with them. If you don't, you are open season. There's no privacy anymore at all.

You can call the 3 credit agencies and have your name removed from the list of those who get the junk mail. Also never throw this junk mail away---shred it. Someone wanting to steal your identitiy just needs to dig in your trash and they can apply for credit cards, loans, etc.

Here is what you can do to keep your name off the mailing list by sign up with OptOutPrescreen that will allows you to take your name off mailing lists for credit card companies. Also that will help to increase your credit scores in 3 to 5 business days - www.optoutprescreen.com - be aware you also will need to mail out the form with your signature so they will permanent remove your name off the mailing list forever. You also can sign up with National Do Not Call Registry and not want to receive any unwanted calls: https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

Here is the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) weblink: http://www.ftc.gov/credit/ and there are some information on how to stop to sell your information to other companies.

Hope those information do help.
