Yes, most of this is due to habituation. You become accustomed to that level of income after a period of time. This is the same reason certain people always feel the need to upgrade - things lose their ability to bring happiness after you get used to them, and they crave a new "high".

That's why we should be focusing on the things in life that never are subject to habituation; such as relationships with friends and family.

Right now dh and I make plenty with both of us working, but we haven't been managing it very well. Its hard to say how much we make as dh's income is not reliable.

As long as I can pay the bills and live comfortably, it is enough. The figure varies so much form person to person.

We aren't big spenders, and right now we have just enough to cover our bills and paying down our debt. If we had enough for me to be a stay at home mom, I would be happy (which would be about $1000 more a month to my husband's salary after you minus what we are paying for daycare and gas for me to work.)

I would say that enough for us is 2000 a month after taxes. We live in an area where cost of living is very low, so I feel pretty blessed on this budget.

Wow, there is definatley big area differences going on. I too wish I lived in a more affordable area but that would mean leaving all my family and friends which I don't want to do. It's highway robbery to buy a house in Brooklyn, NY so I will end up in Staten Island, NY (not that much better). Since I'm not working things are more tough so I would love to have an extra 2k/ month so that I could max out IRA's, save for college, etc. A nice $5200-7000 per month would be great. I'm sure that's on the lower end for many people in NY too!

i would say an extra 6-700 would be nice...we can meat our obligations right now and food on the table and we max out the 401k and ira so i guess it could be worse i'm now trying to make a savings i have about 1700 wich is not bad for just starting in the last 6 months. but we live like we are behind to keep this up. it is not alot of fun in the winter but hey summers coming and theres alot of free stuff to do outside...
