I went and signed dd up for preschool today. We live in florida. I asked about applying sunscreen during recess. THey are only out 30 minutes but I am anal about sunscreen. The director said they are not allowed to apply sunscreen, give any medications, even use diaper rash cream. I supposed it is because if the kid has a reaction they don't want the liability. But I mean really, suncreen and diaper rash cream i supply???

We just apply sunscreen in the morning when they get dressed. I know it is not the same but it is better then nothing.

That is really odd! When I was a daycare/preschool teacher we would have the parents bring labeled sunscreen and apply it every day.

I read somewhere this year , you should apply sunscreen, at least one hour prior to going out in the sun.
So, if you apply it in the morning they should have good coverage by recess.
They also said you should apply at least an ounce when you know you are going to be out , I guess like at the beach. An ounce when they showed it is like the top line of the little plastic cups you use for cough medicine. They said you should be liberal, and yes you will go through a regular bottle quickly.
It was on a consumer program called the "Shopping Bags".

Working in health care I can understand where they are comming from even though I think it is a bit much. Especially if you supply it. There are alot of things that we aren't allowed to do or give because it is considered "dispensing medication."

Can you get a doctor's note that it is necessary? *My family is Irish and very fair, and the pediatrician offered to write a note because we live in Arizona and it's so dangerous. I have to wonder about the wisdom of the preschool, as there are times when it's necessary to give medication, such as a child who is no longer sick but still needs antibiotics for the full ten days. My son had hives, not contagious, but needed Benadryl for awhile after he recovered from the worst. Hmmm.
