I am so proud of myself. I just saved us $253 in property tax!!

We just moved in last year so this the 1st year that we had the assessment on our home. We got the assessed value less than a month ago. So, being the nosey nelly that I am, I checked to see what my neighbor's values were and ours looked higher than the comparable homes. Our house is the middle valued one in our neighborhood - some more expensive, some less. But our value got dumped into the more expensive group. So I called and requested a re-valuation. At first they weren't going to do it, but I pointed out the actual mistakes (they had our sq footage too high) and told him which neighbor's values were comparable and which ones were more (sq footage and sales price) and he said he would call me back. Well he didn't call me back but I checked on line and he had adjusted it down by $253!! YEAH!!!!

EVERY bit helps!!!

I appeal each and every year. In 12 years, I've only "lost" once. Even if I save $50 I figure it's worth it!

Lorie: you say you appeal each year. How? I tried once and the person at the Assessor's office said, "Are you telling me your home isn't worth $xxx?" Well, our home is worth more than that if we were to sell it, so I didn't feel I had an argument. However, they are raising our value, but we don't see the value for us! Just more money. Our value has more than tripled in the 10 years we've had it, and I'm frightened at what our next bill will be. What tips do you and others have? Thanks.
