They can be very beneficial for the right people. If you are looking to pay less in interest rates, they are great. HOwever, you agree to cancel these cards in exchange for the lower interest rate.
You need to look for one that is a non-profit. The ads that you see on TV are places that will charge you for their service. And, you often dont get very far ahead, then.
Consumer Credit COunseling Service is a non-profit organization. They are sponsored by the United Way where I live. They set up a re-pay plan which does not have a negative effect on your credit because you are paying the full amount off on time, just with lower interest rates.
WHen you meet with a counselor, they will be able to tell you exactly what each credit card company's agreement is. For example, Kwik Trip card drops to 0%. Most others drop to 5-8%.
I have gone with families that were paying $450 a month and would not ever have cards paid off at thier interest rates. This family's plan was to pay $245 a month, and, it would be paid off in 4 years.
I have gone through several session with families (I am a parent advocate/interpreter), so, if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer.
Good luck
