Between debit cards and on-line bill pay, I hardly ever write a check anymore. The only time I use my checkbook is to pay for a fieldtrip or some-such activity at DD's school. I swear they should just keep my debit card number on file and make a withdrawl anytime I sign a permission slip.
I have many of my bills set-up with 'Checkfree'. They are always on time and send me an e-mail when a bill comes due. If I have a question about a payment or a statement, I can look it up right on line. I don't have to deal with the paper portion of the bill if I don't want to which is wonderful because I hate filing all those paper statements. The only downside to Checkfree is they don't contract with all my vendors so some of my bills I pay through my bank's free on-line bill pay service.
And here is the weird part ... my bank's free on-line bill pay service is powered through Checkfree. However, they don't have all the features that Checkfree gives me directly - and for free - and my bank is often LATE at paying the bills. That really torques me! One of the benefits of on-line bill pay is you can schedule the money to be transferred on exactly the day the bill is due. So, if the bill is due on the 1st, you don't have to send the check in the mail 5 days ahead of time and hope it arrives on time. However, with my bank's on-line bill pay I may ask that the check arrive on the 1st and sometimes it won't get paid until the 5th! I end up incurring service charges on that late payment even though I may have had it scheduled to pay up to 30 days before it was due! And my bank won't do anything about their error because they are providing me with a free service. That's why I pay as much as I can through Checkfree directly.
