I agree that the separate accounts in a marriage is strange. My dh and I were actually just discussing this because it seems like a lot of our married friends have separate checking and savings accounts. I always figured once you were married everything became OURS, not his or hers.

I would never dream of having separate "his" and "her" checking accounts. The only time I hid money on my husband was when I wanted to surprise him with a big present... but we got into a tight spot and so I had to raid the stash. We discuss all our spending needs together, from grocery budget to clothes shopping, and I can't see doing it any other way, because everything we have is "ours."
