I saw this on 20/20 Friday night. Stephon Marbury, NBA star (formerly of the MN Timberwolves), has created a line of inexpensive sneakers priced at $14.98. He grew up in the projects on food stamps and clipping coupons. He created this line because he wanted to fight the trend of kids needing the $150 Nikes to fit in. On the show, a shoe designer from the Parson's School of Design in NY deconstructed both his shoe and the Nike shoe and found no significant differences in construction.

He didn't receive an advance payment for this endeavor, and will only get paid if sales do well.
I REALLY admire this!! Go Steph!! :rah rah:
Now if only more superstars would follow suit.

Here's more info:

Kim,
I agree.

I read in the paper today that Sarah Jessica Parker is coming out with a clothes line for Steve & Berrys as well. She was qoted saying clothes dont need to cost as much as we are led to beleive!

I saw that on 20/20 too. It was a big risk. I thought the kids were going to think they weren't cool because they were 'cheap' but the kids loved them. I loved that part when the expert took them apart and said that except for the leather, there was no real difference between these and the $200 shoes.

I agree. I hope more celebrities but their support behind products like these.

I am so glad someone brought this up. My Dh & I shop at Steve and Berry's all the time. (we are lucky to have one near us). They are a wonderful store and contract wonderful people. My Dh has a pair of the *Starbury's* that he uses for basketball(he is in a mens league) and it is so wonderful the price we paided for them. We went there beginning of the month when spring just started we got like 22 items of clothing and the pair of shoes for around 110.00 for brand new college appearl and deniem/shorts I think that is a great deal!!!!!!

We have shopped at Steve & Barry's for a LONG time as I have an 11 year old who basically only wears sports related clothing. He liked these shoes when they came out and likes the fact that HE can buy them and other things in the store with his own money. These shoes seem to be a big hit in our school as most of his friends have them in one style or another. Now my younger son who is 7 is begging for a pair. He got a really nice pair of Nike basketball shoes for Christmas that he HAD to have and now likes his brother's Starbury shoes better! As a stay at home mom on a budget, I LOVE this concept and appreciate that even the stars with the big bucks remember what it's like in 'our world'.
