Okay, fellow thrifty moms, do you tip delivery people and how much?

we ordered two somewhat expensive barstools for our kitchen online. I jumped at it bc they had a free shipping deal this month. the guys from a general delivery subcontract company came on this very rainy day and brought in the two stools. I signed for them and the guy hesitated. I knew i only have a $20 bill in my wallet. I didnt give him anything and it was awkward.

I feel bad now. Am I crossing over from thrifty to cheap? should I have written a check?

Honestly i wouldn't have tipped him, it's his job. I work part time delivering mail on a rural route and deliver large packages all the time, i do not expect anyone to tip me, it's part of my job and that is what my boss pays me to do. The only time we are really allowed to accept tips or gifts is around Christmas time and even then it's not supposed to be cash (though our office says anything under $5 is acceptable) and gifts or gift cards are not to exceed $20. I guess it's because im from a small town but i just don't agree with tipping everyone for every little thing, who can really afford to do that?!

Pizza & food delivery we tip 15%. Furntire, appliances,a nd such I don't think a tip is due. They are compensated in there paycheck and I'm sure it is included in the price we pay some how. I did work in the food service profession for a long time, and I gave the best service I could to recieve an honest tip and I believe it is terrible to give a tip for any kind of service.

I tip the pizza or Chinese delivery guy but never would of thought to tip a delivery of furniture. Oh gosh am I being cheap? I just did have our refrigerator delivered and they had to take off a door but didnt seem to stand around waiting for a tip. Should I too be feeling guilty???

I don't think you were cheap. I don't think I would have tipped either. When I see something says "free shipping" I expect it to be free.

I tip the pizza delivery guy, my hairdresser and waiter/waitresses. We don't have mail or paper delivered to our house because we have a PO box or I would probably give a Christmas tip to that person. Other than that, I don't tip. LOL call me cheap but that's how I feel.

We don't tip delivery people. Our pizza hut charges a delivery charge. To us...that's their tip and it's their job. They make minimum wage and they get reimbursed mileage, unlike waitresses/waitors that make half the minimum wage rate and rely on tips.

Proper etiquette does say to tip people delivering furniture, usually about $10.00 per person, unless the furniture is very large, then even more.

I wouldn't feel bad about it though. That whole process makes me feel uncomfortable too!

That delivery charge does not go to the delivery person and the friend I knew that delivered pizza did NOT get mileage. It's really only a couple bucks you have to give them. To me, that like going to a restaurant and not leaving a tip.

I wouldn't have tipped for the guy to bring in two bar stools. A larger piece of furniture where they have to do set-up, yes or maybe.

When we lived in a California big city there were two aspects of life that were constants - lines and tipping. And tipping just wasn't 15%. That was being cheap.

When we moved to Idaho, I kept up the tipping habit until I tried to tip a guy who had delivered a large piece of furniture. He backed away quickly with his hands waving and said "No! No!". You would have thought I was offering him free sex! That's when I caught on that tipping so heavily is more of a 'big city' thing. We still tip a lot when we travel but there are more tipping opportunities then (parking, doormen, etc.)

BTW, the delivery charge DOES NOT go to the pizza delivery driver. If they don't get a tip, their pay is not covering their expenses. In Idaho, which is a right to work state, wait staff (including delivery drivers) get below minimum wage - about $2.35/hr. A tip is assumed in their pay level.

I wouldn't have thought to tip them, isn't that what they get paid for?
We do tip food delivery people and hair dressers, waitresses, etc. You should see the tips I have to leave at a restaurant after Jenna has cheerios all over the floor! The bigger the mess the bigger tip we leave! LOL
