Well I just got back from the auto repair shop and it was only bad news. The transmission is going out of the van and the mechanic warned it could just go out at any moment. So I made the terrible mistake of asking what it would cost to fix it. $1500 I think this can not be right so I said How much! Good thing Pat is a local guy and is used to me by now. Normally he will try to explain what the problem is (he is really nice) I just stop him and say -- Pat just fix it and let me know the bill. But this time!

There is no reason to put that kind of money into the van at this point. It has 157K miles on it. We were very fortunate to pick this van up from my boss (it was his fathers who passed away). It has been really nice and more than paid for itself I think.

But now we are back to shopping for a used car. Dang with putting our house on the market and started to build the new one this is not what we needed. Oh well I guess there is nothing I can do about it.

Vehicle problems are a pain; I'm sorry you're having to go through this. Is the $1500 quote for a new tranny or a rebuilt one? A rebuilt one should be cheaper. However, I can understand you not wanting to put that kind of money into a high-mileage vehicle.

Good luck with your car shopping.

I just had to spend over $1200 on my van with over 100,000 miles. Dh wanted to buy a new one, but we just got braces for ds so I didn't want two new monthly payments. We will probably be getting some inheritance in the next year, so we went ahead and spend the money and are just hoping it will hold us over until then. I HATE paying money to fix cars.

around here that is what it would cost to rebuild one. My dh is a mechanic and just this past Dec. my brother had to have his tranny rebuilt. I know that it was at least that much.

My father was a mechanic and has always advised me that when a transmission "goes" there really is no point in rebuilding/replacing/repairing. I think you're doing the right thing by getting a different vehicle.

I know what you mean about bad timing... most times it is just one thing after another, or something goes wrong just when things seemed fine. I am sorry! But I am sure it will all work itself out!
