Today is the day I do my bills. Dh gets paid weekly. He put in 56 hrs. last week so his check was almost $200 more than usual. Great right? No I'm trying to save his overtime pay for emergency or savings and everytime he gets some, we need to use it toward bills (house pmt. due) or its spent on weekly expenses (gas, snacks for dh to take to work). It just kills me to spend that money when he worked so hard but we need to pay bills right? He doesn't know if he'll have that many overtime hrs. from one week to the next so if I don't pay the house pmt. this wk. we'll be playing catch up all month! I HATE FRIDAYS!

I'm sorry. Did you watch the Oprah show a while back about The Secret? I use to have that attitude about a lot of things. Today, I am thankful that he has a job, I'm thankful that we have a house, I'm thankful that there is food in the refrigerator, I'm thankful that I have a vehicle, I'm thankful that we are all healthy. I just have a different philosophy about things. Why focus on what you don't like? Focus on what you do want and you'll see more of it. He got $200 more than usual, that's great! Let him know how much you appreciate his hard work. I'm not trying to flame you in any way, please don't take this the wrong way. I just wanted to show you a different way to look at it.

You're right. I do need to change how I'm looking at the situation. I'm going to be grateful for what I have and not worry about things I can't change. I'm gonna put $50 in our emergency fund I've been meaning to start. By the way, anyone w/ a emergency fund, what do you use it for and what do you absolutley not use it for.

Way to go! Don't call it an emergency fund, are you setting yourself up for an emergency? Think of a different name with a positive effect. When I save money I think about what I want (my latest was a trampoline for my kids). I put the money in an envelope and I keep a picture of what I want so I can look at it every day. If anything else happens to come up, it always seems to take care of itself and I don't have to touch my envelope. It only took me a couple months to get the trampoline. You can do amazing things when you change your mindset.

I don't really see anything wrong with calling it an emergency fund. It is in case of emergency and nice to know you have. We have one and haven't had to use it yet, so it is not setting us up for an emergency but helps me to know it's there if we need new tires or a new furnace and don't have the money in the checkbook and don't want to use a credit card.

We call ours an emergency fund because that is exactly what it is for. The car breaks down, something wrong with the house, etc. It is only used for emergencies that we can't cover out of the checking account.

We have an emergency fund and a freedom account. The "freedom account" name came from reading Mary Hunt's books on debt proof living. We transfer a set amount into the freedom account each month. This money is used for any house or car repairs that might come up, and any other miscellaneous expenses that come up. I'm also putting a set amount each month into this account for our car insurance and license plate fees (due in January every year) so I will have the money when it comes time to pay them, but also earn a little interest off the money too.

Our emergency fund is a separate savings account to take care of living expenses if my DH were to loose his job. (DH has been unemployed 2 times in the past 2 years). The first layoff we weren't prepared for and really racked up some debt because we'd just had our first child. The second layoff we were more prepared for and able to survive without dipping into our savings. I'm currently working full-time until our second child is born in July and then I will quit to be a SAHM.

For the past 2 months, we've been using his paychecks to cover the monthly bills/living expenses. I've been putting mine into paying off debt and building up our savings. This seems to be working for us right now.

I am with you all because my husband quit work and he was not very happy with his work hour cut down without any explaination - - he now work at new job under the temporary agency which don't get pay that much and now realize I should be grateful that he did not give up to find other job to help me out with the bills, house rent and etc.. I am now looking for other part-time job to earn some extra money to pay down on my debts/IRS and I am very very overwhelm with the debts. Plus I have been attempted to start put the money aside into saving account, but always end up "not have money or that money have to be paid toward something". BUT I do always try to think postive and will work very hard to pay off my debts/IRS.

Our emergency fund consists of any money that isn't used for the day to day running of our house, or expenses we might have. At the moment DH is working and making great money, but since he has his own business we have to assume that at some time we will need to draw from the fund. At the moment we have 10-12 months living expenses tucked away just in case.
