It will sound funny at first, but check Big Lots. We have a much more expensive furniture store here called Ashley's Furniture. I had wanted a black leather couch for my den..but couldn't afford them quite yet. I was shocked to go into Big Lots one day for scrapbooking stuff and find that they carried odd pieces of furniture (like leftovers!) from expensive furniture stores around!! I got my black leather sofa for $399.00 with the tags FROM ASHLEY'S FURNITURE still on it at one end!!!!!! (And was over $1000 there!) My mom and grandmother both checked their Big Lots in their towns and found the same thing in both!!!

Ikea is where we normally shop. I got to admit I like some of the used furniture better. I got my dining set (table six chairs, 2 leaves and all hand carved maple for $200 at an estate sale. I would say shop around not all furniture stores are the same price range, look for un-finished peices and check out those clearence rooms!

We dont have any of the stores that a lot of you have; Big Lots, Costco, Ikea, etc. We finally got a new bedroom set (Oak headboard, footboard, two night stands, two dressers, one mirror and one amiore) awhile back. We got it at Ashley's furniture. They were having a super good sale. We have a monthly payment ($50) but it was for no interest. First five months we had no payment at all, so we just set that $50 aside and have used that for the first payments. You can always pay more and starting next month we are going to double the payment. I am sure you just want to be able to buy your furniture and not worry about payments. But that was our way of getting furniture. We figured since we have never had a bedroom set since we got married (1999) that we kinda deserved it. It was our anniversary present to each other, even if it is for another year or two.

I would recommend using Craigslist. I have bought some very good quality furniture....from people who are just ready to upgrade or re-decorate their stuff. There is alot of people selling junk furniture but there is also some good quality stuff to be found.

We tend to get our furniture made. We live in a Mennonite community and buying from them supports the local people and we can be as picky as we like. We can choose the type of wood, how thick we want it. We can even design what we want and choose the finish. And it's 100% wood (no veneer). The best part is it works out to way less than getting something ready made - that's not 100% wood. You may want to ask around and see if there are any local wood workers if it's wood furniture you are in the market for.

Garage sales are great. Also some of the Discount stores like Target and WalMart have some pretty nice stuff now!!! Sam's has some really awsome furniture. We have some furniture outlets near us, that I haven't really looked at, but the ads look good. Slumberland Clearance Centers are awsome!

If possible buy direct from the manufactuer too....YEARS ago my parents found a set they really liked but had a high price tag, they called the co in NC (Where TONS of your furniture is made!) and got the same set shipped to them for almost $500 less, and that was with the cost of them to ship it out and set it up!
Also, my cousins shopped yard sales and estate sales in upper end neighborhoods and furnished her entire house (art work too) for very very very little money!

Craigslist All the Way! We have so much military up here people are always moving and selling practically new furniture! If you don't have a cl then Ikea is pretty cheap, but so is their quality but some stuff is cute, like the kids section or if you are into modern.
Off CL, I got a over $2000 retail bedroom suite, solid wood, BEAUTIFUL dark mahogany color only 5 months old- I paid $350 for the complete bed, long dresser and mirror, 2 nightstands, and tall dresser. They were moving into a smaller space and didn't have room for the bed and waited until the last minute they had to have a buyer that day!! I love CL!!!! I love my bedroom set! Check CL and you can put a wanted ad for what you are looking for!
