Do any SAHMs out there get by sharing a car with their spouse? Just wondering how you manage and what lifestyle changes you've had to make in order for it to work.

I don't drive (blind in 1 eye and poor perceptual vision) so we have only one car. We purposely picked where we live because of the great public transportation and there are so many places within walking distance. IE Library, grocery store, restaurants, even a cheap movie theatre. Our City also has no school busses but in the fall they are trying to get together a "walking school bus" I am all for it.

The people I babysit for both drive but have only ever had one car by choice. They both work downtown or from home so it works for them, again great public transportation. They are big with their bike and trailer for the kids.

I have never been with out a vehicle.I would be scared if something happened to the kids that I would not have a vehicle to get them to the doctors.I would not want to be stuck at home either. It would never work for us.

I admit sometimes in the winter it can get hard. Honestly Mommysavers helps As far as drs. appointment dh sometimes has to make arrangements to take them. If its a real emergency I would be calling 911 anyway!

We're a one car family too.

Dh takes to train to work. I just have to drive him there and pick him up and then I get the car all day. :D

I have no idea what we'll do when the kids get older though and want to start driving. Maybe they'll be dropping me off at a friend's house and picking me up after.

We've been a one car family for 5+ years now. (Since dd was 1 month old) 99% of the time it works fine. DH works only about 10 minutes from home and he comes home for lunch every day. If we need the car we just take him back after lunch, then pick him up at 5. If we need to go somewhere before lunch we just get up early and take him to work at 8. Yes it can be a pita sometimes but it's much better than the expense of a second car. We also have lots of family in our subdivision (within walking distance) so they would be available for emergencies. We also visit them a lot so we aren't completely cooped up in the house.

I've been through 2 periods of only having one car. You can make it work if you are willing to compromise. There were days I had to take DH to work so I could take the baby to a Dr's appointment or to the store for groceries. I have to say, it's easier when the kids are little and aren't involved in anything. I used to worry about not being able to get the kids to the Dr in an emergency, but came to the conclusion that if it's bad enough that It can't wait 30 minutes for my DH or my mom to get here then maybe I should call an ambulance. I believe that if you want it to work, it will, with some compromise. But if you really don't want it to work, it could be easily sabatoged, KWIM?

We live in rural Maine so it wouldn't be possible for us. If we lived somewhere with public transportation I could do it, but wouldnt love it...or DH wouldn't love it, because I would be the one to use the car

With my husband's old job we could do it. We lived about 1/4 of a mile away from his work and we both were able to use work cars if something came up. But with his new job it really was difficult (we tried for about two weeks). He now works out of town, up a large hill, and commutes between two different locations in a suit, so him biking wasn't a possibility. We live in rural Idaho and there is no public transportation and I won't even talk about winter! Though we do live within walking distance of a grocery store that was about it and with a 3 year old and a baby due in two weeks walking wasn't in my best interest!

Once the baby is here though I do plan on doing a bit more walking. I enjoy that, when possible, and it does cut down on my gas bill!
