i have 3 more years left as a sahm. after ds is in school full time i will find a job that is 8-4. that way i am here when they leave in the morning, and here when they get home from school. i will use my income to pay down debt, and save. and after i do that i will then switch it to go into an rrsp for retirement. or possibly and education fund for my kids.

Ideally, no. I would love to be able to do some volunteer things that I have put off due to ahving small kids and I want to be there when they come home from school, have sports activities, playdates, etc. If anything, I'd rather work part-time so I can be around more. Plus, as they become teens I want to have the home that all their friends come to so that I can keep an eye on them rather than trusting another parent to be around and watchful of their activities. I know what I got away with and I had a mom home all the time. It scares me to think of what could happen if my kids are left unsupervised!!

I heard myself say that a few years ago - when the youngest is in school full time, I'll go back to work. Well guess what, its harder as they get older. What do we do with the kids with all the days off (we dont have 1 full month of school during the year, there is always a day or two off for something), sick days, winter/spring vacations, summer vacation.... The kids are out of school more than they are in school it seems. And as someone mentioned, the older they get the more important it is to be home when they get home and to be home for all those vacations. I see the difference in kids of parents who both work and kids who has a parent home with them. It is huge. I would have rathered work when they were babies (which I did for my dd's, but was home with son from age 2) than work full time in their tween/teen years. The more I stay home the more important I see that it is. Part time around the school schedule - definetly if I could find something but that most likely would only be in a school system and those are hard to come by.

This is how I feel. I may try to find something part time once they are in school, but not sure how well that will work. I love ebay, so I may do that on a more regular basis.

Yes! I am a teacher, so I will have the best of both worlds... I will still have the same hours and breaks as the kids. Because of this, I was not going to stay home at all, I thought I had a great "mom schedule" but when my little love came along I COULD NOT leave him all day everyday!! When he (and hopefully little brother, or sister) are in school, mommy will go back too!

Both of my kiddos will be in preschool same days and times come the fall. Everyone asks me if I will work when they are in school. They will be there 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. My answer is no. I do not want to worry about sickness and vacations (since our preschool follows the local elementary school schedule). I am fortunate to be able to work 1 weekend a month in healthcare which is great for our family (extra money, DH has alone time with kiddos and I do what I enjoy). Even when they are in elementary/high school I will be home.

I do not plan to ever work again, my oldest is in high school now and the youngest is only 20 months. Over the last few years I have learned that the older kids get the more they need a parent at home and available to them at all times.

Shannon/Bryce: I am a teacher and I am with you!!! I have to admit, I got very excited reading the other posts and realizing how completely lucky I am to have this as a career. I am not returning to work in the fall b/c I too thought I had the perfect "mom job" unti lI actually did it for a year and was miserable. Now I am going to stay at home at least for now. We said we'll take it year by year and see how we are doing financially. I will definitly go back when my children are in school. They will just ride with me to and from school each day and we will have all the breaks off together.
My big hope that is that there will be some way for me to still spend some time in my kids' classrooms from time to time and have lunch with them. I always watched parents coming in to have lunch with their kids and got a little sad wondering if I will be able to do that. Hopefully I will somehow work it out to do it at least a couple times a year!

I haven't decided on that just yet. I go back and forth, some days I want to go bak to work and others I don't. I guess it all depends on our financial situation. It would be nice if I don't "have" too that way I can focus on volunteering at the school. Onlt time will tell.
