I don't believe in socialism, but the middle class is disappearing and at a fast rate and that issue needs to be looked at. I also don't think the current tax system is completely fair. It should be set up on a more equal basis.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think would be a more equal basis?

No. But I do think the tax laws could be changed. Flat tax or something more fair. Some wealthy don't pay nearly what they should while the middle class is squeezed. And sometimes the same money is taxed more than once (for instance, my father earns money, he pays tax on that same money. If he wants to gift me some money, tho, he can only do so up to a point. After that I'm taxed on it. Why should I be taxed on money that was taxed when he earned it just because he wants to give me a gift?

I'm not sure how a flat rate would help the middle class vs. the wealthy, since the wealthy are generally in higher income brackets.

Different types of income is taxed a different way.

Payroll taxes "W-2" taxes are taxed at a different rate than;

interest income from items like savings, CD's, stocks

real estate has an automatic $2,000+ depreciation value for each year up to 20 years for rental properties that the landlord can automatically deduct

There are a lot of loopholes in the current tax system that benefit the wealthy.

Right... I get that, but I think that in general the wealthy are already taxed more than the average middle-income family, even with their various sources of income.

I do think that a flat tax would be nice- but 20-25% would be too high of one- 10-15% would sound more reasonable- especially for the people who don't have much money. In our state we do not pay taxes on clothes or groceries (besides candy and the not really needed food items)- anyways- if the flat tax was 25%- a normally $50 grocery bill would be $62.50- that would be rough on lower income people. IMHO- the government gets too much tax money that I think really helps them get paid more- please don't flame me on this one!

As for the wealthy works hard for their money- a lot of the "poor" people work just as hard for their money. Look at the laborers that help keep a company in business with production on their products- if it was not for them a lot of CEO's would be out of work. I don't agree with making everything evensteven though- just some appreciation towards the "little people" that help make things possible for large companies and decent benefits and wages!

I believe that the income tax is a fair tax. If you don't earn it, you don't pay it. I believe that a flat tax also known as a value added tax is an unfair burden to those who are poor or who are living paycheck to paycheck.

As far as the wealthy are concerned, there will always be loopholes and a value added tax wouldn't even make them bat an eyelash. So In essence, I am really not too worried about them.
