I am trying everything I can think of to lower my electric bill. Do any of you ladies (or gentlemen) use a drying rack? I know not using my dryer will save quite a bit of $. Which kind would you recomend? I've seen the wooden accordian type that you just drape the clothes over, but does that cause major wrinkles from the bars? Also, the type you hang hangers on, I don't have that many hangers. Is it worth going out and buying more? Any input would help alot, b4 i go and buy one. Also, my dh won't let me put up a clothes line outside. He thinks they look tacky. He hasn't gotten on the frugal bandwagon yet.

I have a wooden accordian type one. And i have never had any wrinkles from the bars. In the summer, i do have a clothes line and love it (your hubby is missing out!!!!! LOL!). I will put my socks and undies on the drying rack instead of the line.

If you do get a wooden type - find a big one. Mine is smaller, so i can't fit alot on it. My mom has an older one and it is huge - i wish i could find one like that.

Good luck!!

I don't know if this info. will help you or not, but on another board that I belong to ( frugal living - get out of debt type) one member on that board quit using her dryer thinking it would make a big impact on her electric bill. She came back to say it only lowered her bill by $13/month. When you take into consideration the time you will spend ironing every month, will it really be worth it?

I have found that by putting our clothing in the dryer for about 5 minutes and then hanging up will get almost all of the wrinkes out. I hate to iron! Hanging up your clothes will also keep the colors brighter longer. Jeans, towels and sheets are the only loads of wash that get run completely through the dryer.

I have both kinds of drying racks, the accordian style and the style you can hang hangers on. My accordian just broke not too long ago and I ended up replacing it with 2 new ones because I couldn't find a big one like I had.

I had my dh put up a shower rod in my laundry room to use as a hanging rack. I don't have a good place for an accordian one, and the last one I had was pretty rickety and the kids would knock it over. I have also many times just used the shower rod to hang things on- I will put them in the dryer for maybe 10-15 minutes, then put them on hangers to finish drying. That has been the best and most efficient way for me.

how about putting a drying rack right in the shower? it would be out of the way and no one would knock it over. just simply remove it and put it back after bathing.

We're not allowed to put up clotheslines in our neighborhood...which is a shame. I don't dry any of my own clothes and not any of Dh's nice pants or shirts. I wash them and then throw them in the dryer for about 10 minutes and then line dry them. DH strung up clothesline for me in the basement and it's great, luckily I have the room for it. I just use clothespins or hangers.

That is a great idea- why did I never think of that?
