I'm looking for something i can do while the kids are in school. From 9 am - 3 pm. I do NOT want to sell anything, please don't post anything about AVON, MK, HIG or any other direct-sales companies. I also do not want to babysit other peoples kids...! But does anyone do anything outside (or in the home) that brings in some extra $$$? I've even thought about looking for a co. that needs flyers posted door-to-door!

You're limiting yourself a lot. Have you tried to find a job at the school? Teacher's Aid, cafeteria, secretary??

how about selling on ebay? when i was unemployed i sold anything and everything on ebay that i didn't need. i am also considering buying from thrift stores and reselling the items on ebay--especially clothing. it's a great profit and if i do it right, it would be a GREAT second income!
perhaps it would be an idea for you? also, in these parts, i know a woman that braids hair and makes about 2k a week. it is a full time job for her, but she has been doing it for years. she doesn't need to work. can you braid , curl, color hair? perhaps that would be a great venue.
also, you can write. i'm not sure if we're allowed to post up links to other sites, but there is a site that loves people to write small articles for about 2-3.00 an article. doesn't sound like alot, but if you can write 10 articles per day, you can make a pretty good part time job out of it. if i'm allowed to post up links, i will.
alot of the ideas i have i'm not participating in myself, but that's going to change.
you can also clean houses, or run errands for people. i made 10.00 an hour running errands--food shopping, picking up mail, laundry, etc.
so hopefully you can find something great to do that you like to do to bring home money. i myself am not a seller, and i steer clear or the mary k, avon, etc., and i'm not really into watching other people's children, but if it's something to sell on ebay, i'm all for it!

My sister's friend works at Ann Taylor. She works in the back and takes things out of package and steams them so she doesnt work on the floor. she works a couple hours a week for 4 hours each time. She gets a big discount and I hear some stores even give you store credit for each hour worked. you could work somewhere like gymboree and use your discount to sell on ebay.

I liked the idea about re-selling kids clothes. I've thought about doing that before! Just wondering what age group sells best.
I've also thought about taking in laundry and cleaning other peoples homes. The reason I really limit myself is because my husband works an average of 70-85 in 5 days, he works 10 days straight & 4 days off. So i'm honestly the only one to watch the kids. All sets of grandparents work, so that isn't an option. I've always worked, but this is my first full year (quit my gov't job in May 2006) of not doing anything.

What about working part time at your local ymca? You will get a free membership, and make a few extra dollars...
I thought the ebay idea was great. Do you sew? Infant slings and wraps are in high demand...you could make a brochure to take to the hospitals and make personalized wraps?
Oh, and cleaning houses is easy since all you need is a vacuum and car. I used to do it in college, and made good money that way.

I have a question about taking in laundry, my aunt used to do it when she lived in an apt. complex, but that was years ago, so i know pricing has changed!
What's a reasonable amount to charge? She used to use the apts. laundrymat and her own detergent and fabric softner. All she did was wash & fold, and her customers used to pick up at her house at the end of the day.
If i cleaned someones house, i could also do sheets & towels while i was there, then put them away & remake the beds (depending on how long i was there!) Anyone else do anything like this?

We are building a house this year, but next school year, I intend to try to get a job within the school district. There are 4 hour jobs and 7 hour jobs (the 7 hour ones go a hour after school ends) and cafeteria and playground supervision jobs that are only during school hours.
Many of the 4 hour jobs offer eligibility for school district medical, dental, optical insurance that is so comprehensive in what it pays that there is nothing like it on the open market. The good thing about school district jobs is that when the kids are out of school, you don't work. You only work school days so you aren't stuck in the summer looking for daycare. It would also offer a set amount of money based on the number of hours worked that could be counted upon.
Substitute teachers make $130 a day in Oregon (where I am.) I don't know your educational qualifications, but substitutes make a good amount of money with it again being during school hours and only on days the kids attend school. The good thing about substitute teaching is that if one of your children (or more) were sick, you could call the district and tell them that you couldn't be called for a couple of days to substitute.
It sounds like you must shoulder the childcare, so if you got a job outside the home, a school one would be best. You couldn't just quit each summer or over Christmas vacation from a retail position.
