What does $100,000 dollars buy today?

A 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL550 for $103,875.00

A 3 bedroom, 2 bath house outside of Indianapolis, IN.

An older 2 bedroom, 2 bath mobile home in south San Jose, CA.

About 6 months of chemo therapy and related cancer treatments, not including surgery.

If invested at an annual return of 6%, a monthly income of $500.

I don't see anything frugal or simple about a 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL550, JMO.

Well, I guess that would depend on exactly how frugal of a person you are!! I have six kids. I buy clearance or on sale things because of several reasons...one, I all but have to, and two, I LOVE the rush of getting a good deal!! I bet, no I am pretty darn sure, that $100,000 would at MINIMUM clothe all my children for the REST of the years they live at home with me, AND buy all of their food, pay for their haircuts, etc. To me, that is SOME KIND OF MONEY, and to be quite frank, my dh DOES make a really good paycheck. If we were given that on top of his salary, I could say that the next 15 years (until my oldest turns 18) would be set!!

Well, here in my neighborhood of texas, in my family at least, $100 K would completely pay for the following, in full:
My house, (a 3/1),my lot that my house is on (half acre): $47000
The empty lot across the street from my house (also half acre): $5,500
My 2006 Honda Civic: $18000
My DH 2005 Chevy Silverado: $25000
And every ounce of credit card debt we have. Only going over by $2,000.
So, I'd say, $100,000 would pay for every bit of everything we own right now, with some left over since we don't owe all of those amounts on all of those things anymore. That money would have made us able to pay CASH for all of those necessities we have. Leaving us nothing to owe anything to, and saving all of what we would have been spending it on.
I'd be perfectly happy to "come across" or inherit that kind of money, but neither will happen anytime soon. lol.
Depends on where you live and what you buy though too, in some defense.

ETA: Maybe everyone should just move to TX, since apparently we have the most reasonable housing prices by far(that I've seen), compared to some of those astronomical prices you guys are paying in California and Canada! The average price for a mid size, 3/2/2 here, used, is about $125 K. Even then, $600K would buy you a freaking 7000 square foot mansion with an indoor pool and a full size basket ball court, with a MIL house in the back, behind your solid gold water fountain in your stocked pond, next to your marble two story dog house. I can't imagine EVER PAYING those prices, and would, in fact, have to be making a million a year to even fathom those house notes. And we make pretty good money as it is, here in TX.

I would think it would depend on your life goals. I don't think buying a Mercedes is something that I would even want to do. If $100,000 dropped in my life, I certainly wouldn't shun it and say it wasn't a lot of money. (And I'd be happy to take it from anyone who wouldn't want that kind of gift!! )

For us, it would be a sense of security. It would also allow us to become parents without a doubt!! From what I know about the ladies here, most of us try to live frugally to give our families the best we can, given the circumstances in our life. Dreaming about what $100,000 could do for our families is a fun thing to do.

I don't see the purpose of this thread. Is there something I'm missing, or a point you wished to make??

Where I live $100,000 doesn't even get you a decent trailer home (and then you still have to pay $400 or so per month for the pad fees).

$100,000 is about a 17% down payment on the average selling price home here.

I am so envious of all the people who can buy homes (with property too) for less than $100,000. I realize incomes are usually lower in low cost of living areas, but I live in a place with incredibly high cost of living and the incomes do not match. The average HOUSEHOLD (not individual) income here is in the low 60K range, and the average house is selling for just under 600K. Someone shoot me...

Seriously??!! That's what people make there?? You are right, someone needs to re-do the math! That's less than we make, and re-read my post to see what 100K would pay for here!! Come on down to TX, HURRY!!!! You'll love it! Warning: It's suuuuuper hot and humid here right now, but you'd love to see how far you can stretch that income here! Let me know when you're coming! lol

It would buy quite a bit in our area too...I can't imagine living in a place where even a mobile home would be that expensive!!
