We usually do 15%, but most people up in the sticks of Northern MN (family of ours) can't imagine tipping more than 2 bucks (and that's a GOOD tip in their minds!) I know, 15% is the "right thing to do for proper services" and in big cities or towns that surround big cities, I think that a larger tip is almost expected now days.
We've had some REALLY BAD service lately in the town we live in, and when we do have crummy service, we certainly don't even give 15%. In my and DH's eyes waitresses/waiters have to at least do their job to the best of their abilities to get a 15% tip. If the person is rude or short with us, then what do they expect in return? There are QUITE a few people that want the tip, but don't give a CRAP about their service, because they think that 15% should be a "given" and anything over that is extra for "good service." I don't agree with that thought! I think every penny of a tip is for "good service" and should be earned. Some may not agree with me, because people will say "but these people don't get paid much in the first place"...That's right, with out tips, they don't get much- BUT in most people's minds (I think) 100% of tips need to be earned, not just expected.
