random question: how long would a lacquered poptart (as ornament) last? okay i know it sounds strange, but my 3 year old nephew died suddenly two months ago, and I know christmas is going to be excrucitating this year.. i thought i would make ornaments for my family out of a lacquered smores pop-tart, as that was his favorite food.. how could I go about doing that?

That is a sweet idea. When I worked at the craft store one of the craft projects was an ornament that took an ice cream cone that was laxquered. It was probably 4 years ago and I still have mine on the tree.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry about your nephew...

We made lacquered ornaments one year in preschool and I found instructions that were very similar to what we did online. Google to find more info/links/directions.

http://www.ehow.com/how_11081_make-bagel-christmas.html

That was about 10 years ago and we still use the ornament, so they do last a long time. It just depends on the product, and you have to be sure to keep them dry and out of direct sunlight.

Good luck!

Someone posted a tread somewhere about possibly making candles for christmas presents using babyfood jars. I got to thinking, that actually sounds like a great idea! Was there any more info found out about this? Also I saw a little way back about making gel air fresheners, how does one go about doing this?? And an appoximate cost?

Another site for gifts in a jar...the recipe mixes:

http://www.recipegoldmine.com/foodgift/foodgift.html

To find more, all you have to do is google "gifts in a jar" or "recipes in a jar"

I LOVE the caramel apple butter idea!! I think I'm going to do this for some people at church we enjoy giving to and for some grandparent gifts. It sounds REALLY easy...as I've never done any type of canning before!

I'm making fleece scarves for my nieces this year with matching fleece hats.

For my newborn nephew who will be living in GA, I'm making a cloth story book for him. I will print out pictures of different family members onto transfer paper and iron our pictures in his book so he won't "forget" us! Then I'll sew it all together!

I might make a Grandma sweatshirt for my Mom using iron ons of all the grandchildren's pics.

For some of the other nieces and nephews, I'm going to cut their names out of fabric and sew the letters onto a bath towel.

You can also make scented oatmeal/milk bath packets...I use half powdered milk and half oatmeal (chopped finely in the blender or you can use expired oatmeal baby cereal). I take about a half cup of epsom salt and drop my scented oil into it and mix it all together with the oatmeal and milk mixture.

For those who were asking about the scented oils, buy them at Hobby Lobby or a hobby store. A small bottle will go a looong ways. You can also use essential oils from a health food store...they're just a little more expensive.

All great ideas! I was getting ready to try to do the carmel apple butter, but I couldn't find carmels in Kroger. I looked near the baking stuff - like the chocolate chips, mixes, etc. Any idea where it would be?
