With our 2007 tax refund we put $3000 toward debt. I think we maybe went over that by a couple 100. We paid off the plumber (for installing the furnace last year), my mom (owed $100 to her home improvement cc), medical bill (saved 25% by paying now), and today I just settled a large debt that was financed for our water treatment system we had installed over 5 yrs. ago. We settled for 60% (a little more than I wanted to but still good) of the current balance. WOOHOO! This frees up so much more money monthly to pay off small debts, truck pmt., and student loans. I'm breathing a sigh of relief.

We our tax return we paid off the mini van that had $2300 left on the loan.

I sent the last check off to the credit card people yesterday! No more credit card debt.

Jan 2006 I was $35,305 in debt --- credit cards, IRS and a car loan.

Today, March 15th 2008 I have a truck loan for $7,722.

I could get that much by selling it. All credit card and IRS debt is gone.

Truck loan willbe paid off my mid summer!

Ok - So I thought I would throw in my update!!

We paid off our credit card debt!!!! So Sallie Mae is gone, Chase is gone and now we're down to paying off my van. I'm SO excited. I have our estimated pay off date for October, but I hope to find enough money along the way to pay it off a month early for DH's birthday! Espcially since we found the money to pay of our CC debt a month early for my birthday! Happy Birthday to me!!! (the best present EVER)

WE'RE DEBT FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

I usually don't post in forums but in this case I am to thrilled not to share. I recently purchased a program that is going to guide me out of debt. My husband and I bought our home just before the "bubble" took off so we have a reasonable mortgage, We had 26 yrs left on it and the payment was doable but with this new program I will have my mortgage paid in full in less than 10 years. At first I was skeptical but I see it working with each statement.
The best part is it was easy, I didn't have to refinance, my payment didn't change and I didn't have to change my budget. What I did have to do was look at banking just a bit differently but after about a month I had it down and it's been easy to follow. Now in addition to that I have been trying to follow the experts advice and work at whittling down my credit card debt and I managed to pay off 2 credit cards with our tax returns and the economic stimulus rebate check. I have recently learned that most financial experts recommend that you figure the right deductions to claim so that you break even with the government at tax time and don't get a big return. I know the government is using my money and I'm not getting any interest out of the deal but for me its like a forced savings account and I really put that lump sum to use each year.

I am really hoping to post a success story here next year!!
