Now I have a new goal of 200,000 miles. We're only at 70,000 and the car is already 7 years old. Let's hope it lasts!

Anyone else have a car at or above 200,000 miles. You saved a lot of money by keeping the car. What are your tricks to having it last that long, and if you feel like sharing what kind of car is it so we know what kinds can last that long?

We just sold an Acura Integra with over 200K miles on it. We had it for 8 years, and dh commuted 80 miles a day in it. We bought it used from my brother for $9000 and sold it last month for $2500. With all the money we saved owning and driving that car for so long, we were able to pay cash for the new one!!
Dh maintained it very well--always changing the oil and belts and whatever when it was due. He enjoys that kind of thing, so he always did it himself. He says that kind of maintenence is the key! The car he had before that was a Toyota Celica that he'd owned for 10 years and had 215K miles on it when he sold it.
We tell my 6 year old that when she gets her driver's license, she'll be driving daddy's current car!

we have had tons lol!!

right now i drive a 1997 pylmouth grand voyager it has 256,000 miles i paid 1600.00 bucks at the auto auction for it and have only put about 1000.00 total into it in the three years we have had it and 600 was for a new tranny(know a guy so i get a good deal). we just fix and maintain it thats alot cheaper than a car payment..

dh is driving a 2000 saturn and it has 180,000 on it already we just change the oil and regular maintanence.

just got rid of the 1994 saturn that had 355,000 miles on it the only thing we ever did to that one was change the oil and the tires it never broke down.... the only reason we got rid of it was to upgrade to the 2000 since it only cost us 600 bucks..

we had a chevy s10 pick up it made it to 375,000 before it finaly died and we only changed the oil and tires on that as well. so we have had some good luck...

Just keep up on the routine maintenance. I usually get an oil change between 3,000-4,500 miles. Some cars have a reputation for lasting longer than others as well. My 2nd car was known for needing a new transmission after 100,000 miles--found that out from Goodyear after I bought it.

Woo hoo! Ours is a 2000 Saturn too. It just might make it! (I've been really happy with the Saturn).

We have a 2002 cavilier with over 200,000 miles on it. We bought it new and dh uses it to comute to work. It used to be 90 miles one way to where he works, now it is 60 miles. My van is a 1999 and has 160,000 and still going strong. We just do routine maintenance on them both.

Like everyone else said, routine maintenance.

My first car was a Dodge colt with 235,000 when I bought it for $700 - boy did it burn oil! I got rear ended and didn't get to keep it more than 6 months.

Our current beaters:
88 Chevy pickup with roughly 100,000 (we bought it used and I think some old guy owned it that never drove it)
99 Chevy Suburban with almost 70,000
92 Jeep roughly 150,000

We haven't saved much money because we are dumping into our house. The house has tripled in value so it is a good investment. Anyway, hopefully we can start saving when the renovations are complete.

I drive a '98 Saturn with almost 180,000 miles on it. I LOVE my Saturn. I do routine maintenance to it and every once in a while have something minor fixed. The guy I bought it from sells only used and salvaged Saturns. He does all of my maintenance and is cheap. I drive about 80 miles roundtrip to work each day and get about 28 mpg. You can't beat that!

My mom and dh have been bugging me to look for something new, but I just can't part with it. My current holdout is waiting for my Saturn guy to get his hands on "just the right" Saturn Outlook. He knows I'm in no hurry. He's the one who told me to just keep driving the car. Like he said, at this point it's not costing me any money and the value isn't going to change all that much.

I had just over 200,000 miles on my Honda Civic when we traded it in for our Matrix back in 2003. I am currently driving a 1995 Toyota Camry with 195,000 miles on it. We purchased it used from my parents and my Dad took great care of it. He still changes the oil, but sad to say it's taken a bit of a beating since we've owned it. It's still a great car and runs great - no problems with the engine that I'm aware of - just some minor issues. I'll be sad to see it go...we'll be replacing it in the near future with a van that we fully intend to drive into the ground!

We have a 1992 Chevy Cavalier that we won for $10.00 at a raffle. It cost $8.00 to transfer the tags, and we have been driving it now for four years! It is getting near the end of its life (even for what WE consider the end of a car's life), but it sure has saved US money!
