two times we have asked dh's parents to borrow money it was 100.00 each time and we paid it back the following week. other than that we have never asked for help from my inlaws. i would never even consider asking my dad thats a hole other topic... my inlaws are always asking us out to eat(they know we can't afford it) and also ask if we have enough money we always say yes even if we don't. we need to be responsible for ourselves. if we ever needed it they would help us in a heart beat.

We don't receive help and have never asked for it. If we needed it, there are some we could depend on (and they know we are there for them, too). There are others that we would NEVER accept from even though they have offered -- too many strings attached! I'm grateful we haven't had to ask for help and hope to never be put in that situation.

Well,we get help from my in-laws, but it is for the basic needs for our family. They help with groceries, clothes for the kids, and some of our bills in the past. They pay our car insurance because we would not have it if they didn't pay it. They just bought a carseat and playpen for our new baby. We just don't make enough money to survive most of the time. Without their help, we'd be in HUGE trouble.

Hubby and I are on the top of the 'food chain' in this regard. We're so old, there is no one older than us who can help us out. We have people coming to us, asking for help! The only living relative who is older than us is hubby's disabled mother. We frequently need to help her out financially.
Many years ago, my grandmother loaned hubby and me $10K to help us buy our first house. It turns out we didn't really need it but it was easier to qualify for the loan with that money in the bank. We paid the money back to her in 2 years when we realized she didn't want to receive the income from us in interest payments we were making to her and she'd just be happier with the lumpsum.

We get a substantial amount of help, my FIL lives with us, and he pays the rent, we pay everything else, he also gets $150 in foodstamps that helps go towards the household food. Sometimes if he has extra cash he will pass it onto us for a treat or to get something we need, or for ds.
My parents don't help us much anymore, because we don't need it, but if we needed help, they would in a hertbeat. They helped us stop the car going into repo a few times, and thankfully now that is paid off and tottaly ours. And when my dh was unemployed they helped us out with money for some bills we couldnt cover. Which is a big deal for them since they still live in new zealand.

We used to get help with rent all the time. I told dh we can't do that to our parents anymore. I'm sure they were tired of us calling for it. We finally learned how to make it ourselves. We barely make it but we do it ourselves. Now mil did buy school clothes and supplies for the kids because she wanted to. And she sends money during Christmas especially if we are going to visit. So I voted the second choice but I'm glad to say we haven't had to ask for money for a long time and I hope to keep it that way.

My dad is the type - who worked hard for his Family - and we at times went without things - so He assumes that everyone out there should Pay for , plan for and take care of everything that they are responsible for.
My DH is the same way - SO ..... only ONE time when he was in a Car accident - we needed to borrow - 1,000 from his dad - to put towards a new car - ours was totaled . -
we paid it back quickly ...
I seriously doubt My DH would ever allow me to ask my parents for money - UNLESS there was some catostophic need - obviously. Otherwise he has - And Him or I would get 2 or 3 jobs I guess if we ever needed to .
On the other hand my parents like nice stuff and they like to decorate - Very Nice primitive antiquiy stuff.
They Move alot - and we havr ended up getting many decorations , furnishings and household things throughout the years. Most times we offer to pay - ocassionally they will let us -
Like We were all set to spend 1200.00 on a riding mower - they were getting rid of their 1 year old $2,000 one - They let us pay them 300.00 for it . We insisted they take at least that!!

I didn't vote because I don't think any of the choices fit us. We have had to ask my parents or my DH parents for money before, but it was only in emergencies when we didn't have the money to cover it ourselves. Neither one of us have ever wanted to ask our parents for help, but thankfully both sets of our parents have said that if they are able to then they will help us if necessary. These situations have only been emergencies-car breaks down needs to be fixed, unexpected appliance breakdown, etc.
We have not asked them to help us buy stuff for the kids. They will always check in with us and see what the kids need & if there is something special that is coming up then they will buy the kids clothes or shoes without us knowing it. We are always very thankful & greatful.

My inlaws are awesome, we have never asked for financial help but, they buy the kids Halloween costumes, Easter outfits, Christmas outfits, all plane fare to visit them in Florida, and a substantal amount of their bedroom furniture. They also have college funds for each grandchild. They have always been very generous with their grandkids, We plan to do the same some day!
