When do you start them? How much do you give? Are there "requirements" like chores or is it just spending money?

You should do a search because there are a lot of threads on this...

We started at around age 5 with our kids and currently they are 9 and 12. They each get $5 each week...they can spend it however they wish. My kids are big savers, they both have more than $200 saved. They're very careful about what they want to spend it on and they're also very generous as well, which makes me proud. It is not tied to chores. I know I'm an odd man out on this one but we don't have required chores in this house. I wasn't brought up that way and neither was Dh. I have expectations for them, like I want them to keep their rooms and bathrooms tidy. If I want them to do something for me...feed the dog, get the mail, unload the dishwasher, I want them to do it without complaining. So far so good! It works for us!

I started my kids at about 4 or 5 with a sticker chart and for every sticker they get it is worth $.20. Once a chart if full it is $5. I tell them when they can put on a sticker. Like if they doing extra things around the house to help out. Just cleaning their room or picking up messes they have made does not get them a sticker.

My response would be similar to Oregano's. Dd (now age 7 1/2) started getting an allowance around age 5. It was $2/week then, now it's $3/week. She saves almost all of it and is VERY frugal with her money (where did she get that trait?). She also is asked to help around the house but it isn't tied to the allowance. We tell her she's expected to help because she's part of the family.

we have expectations as well for our kids like put your plate in the sink when they are excused from the table shoes on the shoe rack when you get home and take them off. just basic good habit type things they are not chores per say. we do expect that if we ask them to do something the need to do it as well. i just never thought about an allowance i never got one neither did dh our parents just gave us the money. i give my kids a few dollars here and there to put in there piggy banks plus they split all the loose change. might have to consider giving them an allowance they do have to put half the piggy bank in savings when it is cashed in.

$5 a month starting at birth. Ok its in saving now becouse DD is so little. She will get more along with more resposiblity when she can understand money. I just don't have much in the way of extra funds at the moment so it works

What are your kids expected to pay for with their allowance money? Does it all go to savings? Does some go to charity/church? What about things like amusement park fees or movies? Clothes?
