I'm not surprised at the number because in our county it is a lot lower at $31,250 (though I'm looking at old data). I just know that our area has always ran a bit on the lower side.

"The median income for a household in the county was $34,706, and the median income for a family was $42,290. Males had a median income of $36,719 versus $23,924 for females."

This was off of our area's county website. These were the numbers in 2000, so that's fairly old. I am surprised at this as far as our area goes. Oh well. lol

Seems really, really, really low to me.

We make about 25K more a year than that and can not afford to buy a house if we stand by the 30% rule unless we want to live in the less than desirable parts of town.

It seems low to me; but I have to remember that it takes one-income households into account. I also think Southern states generally have lower incomes that where we live in MN.

That's the average for the area I live in as well. In this area that is plenty of money to live on. It doesn't surprise me at all.

Really??? I only ask, because I've always been curious to if people can live "comfortably" in such cases? Please don't take this harshly, but I am really interested how you manage if that really is your situation!?? Call me ignorant!!

Wow! that is low, I am in NJ and that would be the annual salary for one person here. in most trades. So makes you think about how two people need to work in NJ to manage wth the higher cost of living.
In my town the average income is about 60,000-80,000 per household. But then prices of houses are higher.
In other states the cost of living is lower, but the wages are lower too.
We have a situation at my comapny where people are relocating to Ohio and Virginia, with the same pay as in NJ and reaping the benefits of a higher salary in a low cost area. Then only one person has to work.

We live paycheck to paycheck (and sometimes in the hole) on about a third of that. That is because DH works full time and Tommy gets SSI, but then we have things like student loans and child support coming out of DH's check every week, so our take home ends up being just over 20,000 a year. We could afford a house if we made more, but we would lose all of Tommy's benefits, and without Medicaid, he would never get the kind of care he gets now.

I too would have thought it would be higher. The size of some of the houses people build that I see there is no way they can do it on that!
