I was starting to freak out because a trip back home looks like it will cost twice what I had planned, and there's no way I want to strip, or do what would feel like stripping our savings for that so I wondered, how much does everyone feel is their safety net? And then once you get below that in the bank you start cringing?

Funny you ask ~ I was just having a small anxiety attack today over spending some of the money we have been saving. I don't know if there is a dollar amount ~ for me it depends on our situation.

It used to not bother me not to have a large savings (we only had $1500 regularly) in the bank...it was just something I was used to, and we had plenty (at least $200+) from paycheck to paycheck. Now we are the opposite, a large savings (thanks to the sale of our previous home - meant for improving our new home) and almost nothing paycheck to paycheck (I had previously worked very PT before we moved). Now, we are finally getting some needed work on a building of ours that will basically deplete ALL of the savings, and it's putting me into small (yet frequent) heart attacks. I have gotten used to having that rather large safety net, and not having it there is really freaking me out ~ especially since I feel there is nothing else to help build it back up.

Heck if I could have $1000 in the bank after paying the bills I would be extrememly happy and feel secure.

I always have about $5000 in the bank and for some reason I still freak out as if I dont have enough. Guess I just have issues.
I was able to keep my balance high since getting my last tax refund.

I don't know what the number will be for me to feel comfortable. We currently have about $7K in a savings account that is easily accessible. I probably won't feel comfortable until I get to about the 30K+ range. I don't like to have it get below $5K for any reason.

After my husband lost his job, we weren't even making enough to pay our basic bills, so now that he has started his new job, we will be happy to see enough money to pay our bills for the next month. Boy! What a dream to even have savings set aside! I hope that happens some day. Right now, we've cut out anything extra just to stay afloat.

I like to have six month living expenses as an absolute minimum. In the past we weren't able to do that, but for a while we are. Due to the nature of DH's job, we need to prepare for downtimes.

$20,000 makes me feel secure. Plus a significant amount in my retirement account.

Well dh and I are currently debt free. But we also don't own a house... he will be going to school next fall after he returns from Iraq and gets out of the Army. So we will be moving here and there for awhile. Right now we have quite a bit in savings but I honestly don't feel secure. I dont think I'll really feel secure until we have a house and have like $50,000 in savings. I just constantly worry about money way too much. When we first got married we could barely pay our bills and had all of our credit cards maxed out. I'm just afraid to get back there again. But I'd say at least $50,000 in savings and the only debt being a house and I might start feeling secure about our finances.

I like having $5000, Want at least $2000 and would be in panic mode with anything under $1000
