Say your dh gets a substantial raise (or you do). You're saving for your dream home, and with the raise you would qualifyy for the mortgage you'd need and could extend your budget to make it work. Do you wait a few years until you have more of a down payment (so your monthly mortgage payments are about the same as they are now) or do you bite the bullet and make the move now?

It would depend on schools and the ages of the kids for me. If my children were about to start middle or high school I would bite the bullet and move now for them. If they were early elementary or younger, I would wait until I had more security.

I just hate to move kids at that delicate age if I don't have to. JMO

What if the home was in the same school district?

I would wait (as is our current plan anyway) to save up about 50% for a downpayment. That mortgage would still be sufficiently higher than it is now, but by the time we do this, we will both be making a good deal more per year. ANd seeing as we are building in our very own backyard (no moving required), we would just wait til we had enough to put down....no biting bullets here..lol.

It depends on the situation. In our case, we would have well over 50% down by selling our current home. However, how soon is a move really needed? In my case, I really would like a bigger house, but with the scenario you laid out, I would take the money and bank it so I had accessible cash on hand, in savings before moving to a bigger home.

So if the move is not urgent, I would just accumulate some savings first.

I've had the big house and can't keep it clean! I'll stay where I am. Now if it had a little property -- there I might be tempted.

I would save up more money for downpayment since we are qualify for $150,000 mortgage with 3% downpayment which is about $5,000 and we are not looking for the fancy bigger house with our son, but the major for us to buy a house is the safe place with convenience distance to shopping area, school area and our work area too.

More secruity for sure. I have no desire to live in a bigger home. More to clean and more property tax. The less I pay in taxes and the less I have to clean, the happier I am.

If I were in those circumstances I would probably move. I would assume that I need a bigger house because my house was full of young children who need the room. If I waited, we may not need the space any longer.

I am not in that place, thank goodness. We have all the house we need.

i would stay put our house is big enough i would however spend the 15,000 to jack up the house and pour a new foundation.(our house is over 100 years old) maybe add a new furnace windows siding roof and appliances have all been done in the last 6 years. so it would make more sense to fix the basement(it could then be potentialy usuable space) and stay here since we don't owe tons on our mortgage now.
