Can I just email the credit reporting agencies? I applied for a loan to get some car repairs done, (since we have no money in savings )they approved me, but kept asking about some items on my credit report. I had paid off said items a LONG time ago, but they still appear on my credit report as open. I need to get them off. Where do I email or do I need to call?

Everything you open stays on your credit report until you call and have it removed. Even if you paid it off, it will show it there as a paid off, open account. It's actually good to have a few things there that you don't use on a regular basis.
I think you can google transunion or experian or something like that, those are credit report agencies, for a phone number and call and get it handled fairly easily.

First got to check it:

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

That is the ONLY free report one. You can get your report free, but you do have to pay for score. The others you hear about make you sign up for some program, and you have to remember to call to opt out or you get charged big time.

I think to remove items, you have to print the form off the agency site, and fill it out. You may have to fill the form out for each reporting company (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax). The above link gives you the reports for each one (sometimes each agency doesn't have the same info on it....)

You need to get a copy of the report, circle the incorrect entries, write a short letter (the experts suggest a separate letter for each incorrect entry, but I've not found that necessary), telling them what the correction should be. Tell them that you need them to show you proof that it is a valid debt, and if not, they must remove it within 30 days. The experts suggest you send it certified so you have proof of all dates.

We've gotten notes back saying, "The debtor has verified the entry is correct." when it wasn't, so don't take that cop-out. By law, they must PROVE it or remove it. I had one person at one of the agencies tell me they are allowed a reasonable amount of time. When I stated that it had been 90 days, she said, "Well, that is reasonable to us, as we are backed up." Nope. They actually have 30 days. Period. But if it's paid, the debtor is the only one who can choose to remove it completely, but the agency does have to show it paid, if you have proof that it's paid (send in copies of the proof).

Yep, desertmom is right. We had to do this when we bought a house. It takes time to get them off 4-8 weeks, then sometimes a creditor will say okay and not take it off so you have to do it again!

dessertmom and maggiebugjuice are correct you need to send it in writing with copies of all your proof then be ready to fight about it back and forth. they are very slow and the reporting on credit reports does get messed up so make sure all the stuff is yours to begin with. you will also need to contact the creditors and ask them to take it off(this may take several attempts alot say they will then never do)... good luck its not fun or easy.
