We have a 529 for each boy and put in a little money (automatically deducted) each month plus whatever extra money they get at Christmas and birthdays. No way will we save enough to pay their entire way, but I would like to be able to at least offset the cost. My parents did pay my way through college (2 years in community college and 2 years at an in-state college) and I am extremely grateful that they did so. I worked my tail off (I realize not everyone does) and was fortunate to be able to enter the workforce without debt due to student loans.

I have 529's for my older two and I need to open up one for my youngest but I haven't yet. I also have ING savings accounts for all three and I only put a little in those every month, they can use it for a car at 16 or whatnot, when their balance in those get higher I will transfer them to more aggressive investments.

No. It would be nice, but we have chosen instead to save for our retirement. We couldn't do both, so that is what we chose. I think that education is very important, but there are many ways out there to pay for it. No one is going to give us a scholorship or a low interest loan for our retirement. Just my 2 cents.

My education was paid for with a family grant left by a deceased family member. A great aunt died (I was in 11th grade)who was an educator and writer of text books, never married and left 5 million to be granted to the descendants of her parents to use for school. I was the 3rd to use it and it is still there for my kids, their kids will most likely get to use it as will my great grand children. The principle has not even been touched in the account and it is earning at a great rate. Also, all 3 of my children have a trust set up by my parents to cover anything the grant doesn't cover (you still have to pay taxes on the money, but still taxes on tuition is a lot less than the tuition itself) and to get them started in life. DH and I have not had to put forth a dime for college, they are set

We have IRA accounts for my kids education!! my parents started each of the grand children one when my oldest had her first Christmas!! we try to put money it it everyso often and they get some from my parents at Christmas as well!! the kids ar ejust learning about it!! they can use this money in any way they want toward an education of any kind!!

I do think its imp to have kids help with paying and all but I also do not want them to be in debt when they get done as well!!
