Who does? Is it a 529 plan, or something else?

Dh and I have a mutual fund set up for ds's education. It is in our names but the money is for his education. When my mom passed away (7 years ago, ds is 6) we put some of the money away for our future children's education. It does duel duties for us as well, because each month we put in $50 additional for ds's education, plus almost $600 - that is ds's monthly payment for Montessori. We spread it out throughout the whole year, and then twice yearly his tuition is due we just request a check from that account. So we earn interest on it from the principal, the $50 plus the $600 monthly, then we turn around and use some of the interest to pay for ds's Montessori. It works out well for us because his money is helping us send him to school.

We opened prepaid accounts for all the children. It wasn't an option so I didn't vote.

We have 529s, bonds and a CD for each. The 529 transfer is automatic each month.

I may be the odd man out here, but no. I have never saved anything for my kids' education. I don't think it is important to. I think education is extremely important, but my kids will do it on scholarships, grants, loans and help from us. That is how dh and I both did it.

Not the odd man out!! I also Don't See an importance in socking away money and really NOT even knowing where it will be going or even if your Child wants to Go to college.

I also am strongly into making kids Pay their way - to apreciate things more, You know ??

If mom and Dad are paying 100% - Let the fun begin!! If Teen has to pay at least 50 % , I bet he will be more apt to keep those grades up!

I make my kids save a portion of their money and Of course they all have piggy banks that get emptied yearly and all that money goes into Their traditional savings accounts.

We do. We have an RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan) we set up for the kids the year they were each born.

Our goal it to cover 1/4 to 1/2 of their expenses (much cheaper in Canada but still $20,000 a year with tuition and room and board at a good university).

I would say that fits under the last option, since it's an account solely for their education. (sorry if it was confusing)
