If your kids are in school, you might try applying to a temp agency. That way, you tell themwhen you are available, and they should try to accommodate you if they really want you to work for them. That's how I got my job a couple of years ago, after searching for years for one that met all my criteria. I'd been out of the work force for ten years, and it finally dawned on me that I'd have to start slow, to gain an employer's trust. After three weeks being a temp for the first place I interviewed, they hired me permanently.
If you do have small children at home, you might consider offering daycare services. Or, if you have other skills that you can market (Do you sew/mend? Bake? Care for pets? Organize photo albums?? etc.) You could list those types of skills on Craigslist. A lot of people will pay other people to do things they just don't have time to do.
