I can happily say that I have kept track of every thing we have spent in 2007, with a tolerance of say $250. I have all the receipts in monthly envelopes, along with a monthly spreadsheet detailing expenses, right down to the store the items were purchased in.
What has this done for us?
1. Taught us where and where NOT to buy things
2. Given us an accurate picture of how much we are spending on groceries
3. Shown us where we are letting money slip through the cracks
4. Shown us how much we have paid off on our mortgage
5. Kept our spending in perspective and control.
It was difficult and took a great deal of dedication but is well worth the effort. Since I am blessed with the ability to be a SAHM, I just consider this part of my job in keeping the house and finances in order.
Good luck for those who want to try in 2008! YOU CAN DO IT!
