In Oregon we have a fairly high state income tax.. but no sales tax, so it all evens out as far as I am concerned.

Oregon doesn't have a sales tax on ANYTHING?????? Wow! I have only heard of a few states (Florida included) that doesn't tax foods or meds, but never meds. I think Minnesota does tax clothes, if I remember right.

Our state tax situation is pretty bad this year.

We live in Idaho. My husband works for a company based in CA. Fortunately, my husband doesn't work IN California so we get to claim Idaho state income tax. However, the company where my husband works was bought out this year by a company in the state of Massachussets. They didn't have an Idaho tax ID number so they with-held state income taxes and paid them to MA! They just now got the problem solved and hubby's last two paychecks of the year will have Idaho state tax withheld but most of the rest of the year had money going to MA.

So, I'm lobbying for the company to do a reversal - to deduct back the money they paid to MA and make a lump sum payment to ID instead. They are a large corporation so it isn't like this will cause them a financial headache. Rumor is that they have messed up other employees paychecks like this and haven't done the reversal.

The only thing we have that comes close to a sales tax is the 5cent deposit on cans.. but really that isn't a tax as you get the $$ back when you take back your cans. We do have a tax on gas & cigs.. and maybe on booze too, but these taxes if any are included in the $$ of the item, so you really never see how much is being taxed.

Other than that we don't have sales tax on anything. In our area there are lots of people who live in WA but shop in OR for that reason. Also, when I do any shoping in Washington I can show my drivers license and not be charged sales tax. I don't always do this, but on bigger purchases I sure do!

PA has 3.07% state tax and 6% sales tax on everything but clothes and food. Bigger cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are higher than 6% - I think they are 7. Sometimes it's a good thing to live in the sticks.

No state income tax OR sales tax in NH!! But our property taxes (on the already bloated property values) make up for it.

NH property taxes can hurt but it doesn't bring the total tax burden anywhere near most states. Depending on whose index you look at, NH and AK take the cake for lowest overall tax burden in the nation. That takes everything into account, sales, hospitality, gasoline, income, property and on and on. Most people have no idea how much we fork over to the government or how poorly they handle it.

We could teach bureaucrats about frugality but they don't care as it isn't their money and if they fail, they just get more funding.
