Let me say first, I do not expect my dh to get a second job. That said, some guys at his work said that since he does all this work on our house, why didn't he just do it as a side job. Does anyone else's dh do this? He has not been offered work or anything, but I wouldn't know how to go about advertising for that (he's not a licensed contractor or anything). Any suggestions or opinions?

Just by word of mouth. that's how my DH gets his side stuff. He hears someone say they need something done, or someone else hears that and recommends him, and boom. He's not licensed either, but that doesn't matter. As long as he can do a good job for a fair price, he should be fine. Right now DH is doing an add on for my cousin, just because she mentioned they were wanting to do so, and I mentioned that that's what dh had been doing lately, so there ya go, job in hand. It willbe slow starting off, but eventually he might be turning down jobs because of time constraints.
Good luck! it can be profitable!

My DH does - he's a tree trimmer. His main job is working for the power company, trimming around the powerlines. He does side jobs occasionally.
The economy has been pretty hard this year for him to get side work - no one has the extra money to pay someone to cut trees for them. We don't need any more wood either.
When he does get jobs, it's from word of mouth and previous customers, or he will keep an eye out for people who have trees that look like they may need work on them. He will go to those people's houses, give them a card, and often, give them a bid on the tree. He doesn't advertise at all, but back when the economy was better, he did pretty good. I'd say two years ago, he had a side job every other weekend, this year, he's maybe had one every other month. He's done a lot of bids though.
He is not "insured" or bonded or anything, but he carries a waiver for any homeowners if they wish (to say that if he breaks something, he will repair/replace it). He's got all his certs for working in tree trimming for 15 years.
For your DH, I'd just say to have him offer services to anyone who you hear of that may need work done, and that to make sure he bones up on prices of supplies and makes sure to bid jobs so he gets paid....it's no good to bid a job to get it, only to have to "pay out" because you bid it so low, you are only covering supplies, let alone time. DH has a minimum of $150 to put his climbing gear on. He starts his bid based on that as his own "pay" and adds on to it depending on how big or how much work or finesse the tree will take.
HTH.

My DH does side jobs and it is entirely by word of mouth. You just need to let people know that he is available and looking and the jobs seem to roll in. Just be careful to have everything worked out with the person first. My dh did a side job in June and has still not been paid by the person because she is a weekender in our town and she ony comes to town a few times a year. So since she hasn't seen the finished product yet she has not yet paid us!! And this is 6 months later!!!!

We both do side jobs -- whenever one pops up. I worked here and there for the school district. My husband did radio annoucing for the football team this year, he did a spot for Frank TV (made $340.00) but that isn't the norm. He also is on a couple of drug boards (perhaps I should stress ANTI-drug boards) that he is paid for as well. We both worked at a tree farm one time. They're things that we usually enjoy and it's usually not a lot of money but they've always helped out!

My dh has played music for years. Sometimes he plays with his band or other times he does a solo, one man thing. He is very talented and makes good money doing that. There for a while he was strickly doing that for an income. But he is slowly growing up and realizing that he is missing out on a lot of stuff with the kids with being gone every weekend. So here about 2 months ago, he got a real job. He has had real jobs before, but this one he really likes. So he will continue to play music on the side for extra money. But now with a regular job, he can pick and choose more which jobs he wants and when he wants to be gone.

Yes, when things get really tight he is often the one to get a side job. He has done everything from painting (walls not portraits ), tutoring, working in a group home for the night shift where he just had to sleep there in case of emergency.

My dh's entire job started out as a side job! lol But he is starting to look for some side jobs to do. Word of mouth has gotten him a lot of offers around here. I too am going to start picking up some on the side work if I can.

My fiance mows lawns occasionally and gets $50 per piece of property. I also signed him up for a bunch of survey sights because he gets bored when I am at school.

My dh's current job also started as a side job. When we met he worked for PBS television and over the years he has done lots of side jobs with video production. He has done a video for a Lutheran school wanting to raise $$$ for a new addition (he shot, produced, directed and edited it). He has run camera for Notre Dame's graduations for the last 6 years or so. We have done youth conferences (where I run camera and he directs which camera goes on the big screen so people can see the speakers) both here locally and in Colorado. He has also done a little bit for ESPN and for the BMX racing circuit. He started doing some video work for the church he is full time employed at and within 6 months they offered him a full time job. We are doing another youth conference in one week!
