I was wondering... how many of you do your own taxes? I use to do them myself when i was single and didn't have a house. Now that i am married, with kids, and a house... i wouldn't dare. I don't know where to put my deductions.... and if i mess up, i don't want the IRS after me.
How do you do them?

we do our own for years we thought we had to have a place do them becuase we had a house to deduct and we needed to itemize and a friend convinced me to do them myself and she would help me she had a home daycare and did there families from the get go.. so i tried it and boy had i been wasting my time and money letting a place do them.. its so easy you can't really skrew it up... you would be surprised you can do one online for free to try it out you don't pay unless you file it...

Last year was the 2nd year that we paid to have ours done in our 8 years of marriage.. The 1st time was because dh insisted that we had to with me having a home baised business.. Last year we did because I could not figure out why the online tax calculators were telling me that we could receive a refund of 600+ more than I was figuring on paper. I had to pay $300, but received a higher refund (including paying the fee).. and was told why the difference was occuring, and how I could submit an ammendment for the previous years taxes, to receive another 1k.

I will be doing the paperwork on my own again this year. We qualify for the free online tax submission, which we will do for uncle sam.. but will probably wait to mail in our state taxes, because as I have figured them (with my estimated amounts) we will owe $150.. and I will wait to pay this with our refund from uncle sam.

Really, the computer programs make it so easy! If you are having issues, take a look at last years paperwork to help you figure it out. You can do it!

I've done mine using Turbo Tax for many years - it's really quite easy and it walks you right through it. If you decide to try it, use your previous years' forms to ensure you answered the questions right and get all you are entitled to.

Yes, but I cheat and buy the software. My dad and brother are CPAs, so I may break down and ask one to do it this year. I always get my dad to look over it anyways.

H &R Block has done ours for more than 20 years. When it starts costing more to get them done than I get in a refund, maybe I will switch. Right now, I am more than happy with the service.

I used to do them on my own(and loved doing it). I'd use the previous year's returns to help me make sure I have filled everything in. But once I started daycare in my home, I needed to have someone else do them for me. So much figuring involved in running a small business in my house and deductions and stuff that I wouldn't want to make a mistake and get audited. I probably could do it myself since I've paid to have it done the last 2 years but I want the protection that if I get audited, I don't have to worry since I had someone else do it.

We use Turbo Tax and it is really easy. It walks you through everything step by step for both State and Federal. And it double checks everything at the end and if there is an error it shows you where. It's awesome! And then at the end you can e-file and the refunds come back pretty fast...about 4 weeks.
