When it comes to saving money do you do anything that others might find "odd", but it works for you?

I like to round up my purchases in my checkbook (not so odd anymore since BOA started their keep the change program!) But if I make a purchase for 12.50... I write 13.00 in the register. I usually find by the end of the year I have a very decent amount saved and I never felt a pinch!

I'm just looking for some other quirky ideas to save money and not really feel it.

Any thoughts?

We also round up in our checkbook. We save ALL change, when our jar is full we roll it and put it in the kids savings accounts.

I have tried this and it works great. But I found it very difficult to reconcile my account each month without it getting to confusing. If you don't mind, how do you keep it from getting confusing?

Next to the description of transaction I also write in the real amount (Ie; I'd write Target 12.50) , but in the payment/debit column I write 13.00. I only subtract what I have in the debit coumn. I only pay attention to the amount next to the description to reconcile. When my amount goes through my checking account and clears it I put a dot in the tax column ( I don't use it anyway), so that I know that item has cleared and the amount is correct. I also check my bank transactions almost daily so it is very easy to keep up with.

Thats a great idea. I may steal that. LOL

Here I dont do much that I think is noteworthy. The saving of change, throwing singles in there when I have some, Transferring $10 automatically into savings from checking every month, round bills up to next $5 incrament. So if water bill is $50.13 I pay $55 that way next month it will be a little pre paid. Silly I know but I like even numbers in my book!

When you round up like that, do you ever keep track of the extra amount, and at the end of the month, or every 2 weeks or something add it up, then put that bit in a savings account? Or... ?

We save the spare change, roll it periodically, and deposit most of it into our savings account. Say I had $113 in rolled change, I'd deposit the $100 in our savings, and split the $13 between the twins. Since coming here, I've also started saving my $1 bills in one of my drawers....I don't even miss them, and so far in January I've saved over $50!! Since Brian is the saver and I am the spender of this family, (a "problem" I'm currently working on), saving my singles has been an "easy" way for me to save some money fairly quickly. Even Brian was impressed that I'd saved it, but also had to make the comment that if I practiced more self control, I wouldn't have to just stash the singles away!! Whatever.....lol Techinally, I know he's right, but he just had to get that little jab in there!!

I add it up, just whenever the mood strikes, leave $10 (I call it my cushion) and transfer the rest to my savings account.
