I'm not sure I agree with any of the choices. I'd be majorly bummed if we received a large refund because that would mean I didn't plan well and didn't have access to that money during the year. I don't mind paying a little. I rather not give up my money until I have to. The KEY for me, is seeing the BOTTOM LINE - comparing how much we really paid in taxes (as a percentage of our gross income) compared to last year.
As for having a business, you CAN pay quarterly taxes if you want. In some cases, you might even be required to file quarterly.
This year will be a hassle with state taxes. The company where my husband works got acquired during 2007. The new company didn't have an Idaho tax number so they withheld state taxes based on their corporate headquarters state. We don't owe taxes to that state but we do owe taxes to Idaho. Now I have to file non-resident taxes in that other state, hope to get most of the money back (I already checked and we won't get it all) and use that money to pay Idaho. Yuck!
