It says that in Missouri every high school student must take a personal finance class to gradaute.. Yeah RIGHT.. My school didn't even offer one, not even one close to helping.

Our state doesn't require it, but our county does so I am HAPPY! It was a big deal when they passed that requirement last year - a lot of parents didn't think it was necessary. I know when I was in high school we had a mandatory class that taught basic life skills like check writing, budgeting, etc but it also covered interviewing and time management - I use the things I learned in that class a whole lot more than most of the other stuff I learned in high school.

Our state doesn't require it, but our school does offer it as a class and my dd has signed up for it because it will be of great benefit for her.

You know, it really would not matter to me if my state had it or not. Sure, it would be good to reinforce things, but if kids don't see their parents doing well with money matters, I don't think most will a) take a class seriously or b) learn anything.

This is one of those topics that yes, would be nice to have in schools, most definitely, but if the parents are not already teaching a portion of it, it would not do that much good. JMHO

And this from someone who thinks economics should be a requirement to vote! Well, not really, but there sure are times I think it!

I'm shocked to see Louisiana is actually ahead of the game on something. If they could just fix the drop out rate so more children make it to High School to take the course, then I'd really be happy.
