WHOA!!! I just happened to come across a website that stated the average credit card debt by state, and I was shocked to see that Colorado (where I live) is #1 with over $13,000!!! Yikes! Thankfully I do not come anywhere near Colorados average at all!!!

The site is: Debt Stats - Average Credit Card Debt by State

Where does your state measure up? Was anyone surprised by these numbers, as I was? Does anyone see any patterns in states that have more or less debt than others?
Of course, I do not know exactly where they gather their information from, and if it is 100% accurate, but it is interesting.

I can't remember the site, but I saw one where the suburb I live in rated as one of the highest in the nation for credit card debt. It was something like 46% were at or near their limits on their cards, and the average # of cards was 9.

I'm actually surprised Florida isn't higher, with its lifestyle, people buying or leasing boats, and homeowner's insurance putting a strain on so many budgets. Not to mention the energy costs for A/C.

I thought CT would be higher too. I know quite a few Jones. When we had debt it was MUCH higher than that. We just changed it from CC debt to Home Equity debt.

I'm in Iowa and wasn't surprised....we don't have any CC debt, so we pull the avg down....

How on Earth is someone in California who has an APR of 57% ever going to be able to pay off their CC!!!

Wow! I can't believe some of the averages! I majorly stress out from having 1K in debt, less alone some of these numbers. The average for Mississippi is $9,701.20! That is a scary number, especially since Mississippi is one of the poorer states.... But just up the highway 10 min in Tennessee the average is $6,196.89. That is considerable lower. I am thinking not having to pay state taxes must be beneficial!

Did you see that California has an average APR of over 57%!?!? Whoa! - Is that even legal?

The data is gathered from the people who actually use their service, so it's not representative of the population as a whole. It's a very, very small sampling. Remember that the people that have to use a credit card service are more in debt than average as well, which skews the stats.

Here are some more statistics gathered by the credit card industry:
Credit card industry facts and personal debt statistics (2006-2007)
